After countless attempts to get my E220 working in Linux [initially Gentoo & lately Ubuntu 6.10], and continually getting the "Modem not responding" error when running wvdial, only to find that usb_storage has magically reappeared in lsmod, I have found a really basic solution that appears to be working in Ubuntu 6.10 [see screenshot]:

- Go to System>>Preferences>>Removable Drives and Storage
- Untick the checkboxes under Removable Storage [Storage tab], then click on the Close button
