Got to try out VSTAR:

`4.8-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso' at 10976521 (1%) 432.4K/s eta:33m [Receiving data]

(From ftp://freebsd.is.co.za/ with lftp - this went from 200KB/sec to 900KB/sec)

I also downloaded an item cached on Sentech's cache, at approximately 1.5mbytes/sec sustained.

ftp.is.co.za traceroute:

Jus, that all looks great, could you possibly try something similiar to that during office hours, really interested to see how that would look

That was at about midday during the working week.

Hi All.

I have just installed the vstar 512/50 solution. My 64K line is also still active so i am currently doing some nice testing to see what i can get.

Downloading a service pack (128Meg) from Microsoft on the 64K line. I get 6K per second.. ok for the 64k Line
Downloading a service pack (128Meg) from Microsoft on the Vstar 512/50 solution . I get 9.6K per second.. this is at 22:20 at night when the network is suppose to be quiet. I must say that i am very dissapointed with this solution so far. I will call their technical personell in the morning to find out why i do not get a bigger downloading rate.

Oblix, 22:20 here is approx 15:00 at Microsoft and avery tom, dick and harry in the states is on M$ at that time.
Try in the morning around 10:20 and see the difference.

I know I do the same and tend to judge peak times with SA time [:)]

Hi ProAsm

what i did nto mention (and after i published i got a feeling that this is going to happen) is that i did the same test to 2 South african sites. tucows and ftp.is.co.za and got the same results.

i have performed the same test and getting the same results.

i know what this solution is capable of, en will work closely with sentech to get it to work 100%. currently im getting 1kb per second.

i am waiting for the call from sentech engineer

mmm yeah check it out.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) I dont deal with VStar although I do have a setup at the office and it very rarely drops below 120 KB/sec and I do my tests to nVidia.com
Granted I have seen other guys doing downloads at 8k or less but then who knows where they are dling from [:)]

Hi ProAsm,

Does MyWireless and VSTAR use the same pooled bandwidth[?]

Are the contention rations really 512/50[?]

Ta
TheRabbi

TheRabbi, no, VStar is direct Satellite access, wheras MyWireless uses local bandwidth and peers via IS.
If you ping any server from VStar it will always be 500+ whereas MyWireless is about 250 and Internationally about 350.

And yes, the contention ratio for VStar is 512:50

Hi ProAsm

I would like to meet with you if possible. all i want to do is a point to point (you offices to mine) download. by doing this i would be able to see if ther problem is on the peering links with IS or of it is on the Satilite bandwith.

Sentech did return my call, and revealed soem rather shocking technical details to me..

oblix, you're welcome but not sure where you are as I am based in Durban.
Would be interesting to here what this techie told you - mail me.

There is no change in Microsoft's speeds based on time. There is no "peak" time for them... I can get full speed (1.1 MB/sec) at any given time of the day.

The bottleneck is somewhere else down the line.

Some feedback regarding Sentech Vsat speed.

i am currently running a 512:50 system, what this means in bandwidth terms is that when the system is congested i will get 10.2K download speed to my machine.

Here is my findings.
i have tried the same test to any site, local or international. With ftp or a normal copy or a normal download of a file.
the best i got from this system is 4.7K down. and 4.9K up. When the download starts i will get up until 56+Kbits per second (512k) and 2 seconds later i will sit on 4K. This is a clea indication that i am being trottled on my bandwidth. I am not using any peer to peer software.... this is a pure download from a website.

Sentech is now laughing at me because i already signed the contract for 3 years. But in this time i will drag their name trough the mud for selling me a solution that does not deliver to what is is ment to.

I can prove my findings to anybody that is intrested in this.

I will not recommed this solution to ANYBODY, not even to the local schools where they install these solutions.

I have tried talking to sentech, no luck. Even their partners said that this solution is not delivering to what it is ment to.

Do not sign a contract with sentech. Their solution does not deliver to what they say it can....

Jerrek, are you uploading via another medium? and just using the sat to download, is the sat all that is running?
