Your assumption is very incorrect. If you look at big companies i.e. blizzard they usually prefer Ph.D and Msc people over standard Bsc.

I've had this argument with my gf as well who is currently doing her masters, abroad it will be very much in her favour, perhaps not locally. But we never intended to stay in this ***** hole.

In order to specialize in a particular area at a relatively high level of competency (usually a working knowledge of the cutting edge research in the field). Very valuable professionally if the skillset is in high demand.

Professional masters programs are increasingly popular abroad, or even undergraduate degrees with a masters year/component. It is very common to have to compete with graduates with these qualifications abroad. There are also numerous opportunities for South Africans to be fully funded to study a masters abroad on a prestigious scholarship, which carries weight with many overseas companies. It's a way to really 'cash in' on good undergraduate mark. A masters degree means something quite different outside of SA.

I work for Toyota SA the IT programming grads get between 16000-25000pm plus a 6000 car allowance but you have to get a toyota which on that rate you can get most lexus and all toyota except landcruiser and a petrol card

Another quick point: Apart from just the education, a masters degree can help you obtain a work visa and/or residency (smaller visa pools, more immigration points, etc.).

A female friend did her Masters in Programming or CS not sure of the official name of the masters.
She started working at standard bank after completing her masters with no work experience at R20 000 p/m.
They also stated that they hired her over other candidates because she was female.

Friend was hired straight out of university years ago, worked on longhorn, vista, windows 8 and now 8.1 zero experience, earning stupid money now as a kernel developer at redmond.

Relocating to SA, not sure where you are pulling these random stats from. Because that is rubbish.

Kernel team has nothing to do with the GUI team, but yes vista was a dismal failure.

Especially with the tricky places like Canada. In SA a Hons degree covers most bases (in my profession all of them) yet overseas its got to be masters+ to be worth something.
