Static IP address on ADSL router

Yo,

Has anyone tried to set the ADSL IP address as static ? .. I used a 165.x.x.x (uncapped) IP address that was previously assigned by DHCP.... I just set my netGear router as static IP and I have not seen any problems with connectivity ;-)

Start getting IP address conflicts on ADSL network, sounds interesting !!
Confuse the Bandwidth billing data as that I'm sure is attached to
the VISP username and password

Will only work once till get capped, then it will not be able to assign that uncapped ip range, and you will be forced to either change it to an capped ip range or put it back to dynamic.

Telkom isnt stupid, just greedy.
 
Work once as in if you disconnect or theres a power failure then it tallies up what uve used and then the cap leaps at you like a traffic cop from behind a bush.
 
What is the capped IP address range for the 165.146.0.0
IP's ?
I know if you are capped you are allocated an < 165.165.62.0 ? range
 
That sounds like a really bad idea. You're likely to get screwed over, because they will just drop the route when your IP lease expires.

Well ... in a LAN environment, the client can request a specific IP from the DHCP server, most clients just ask for the same IP they got last time back. If the server doesn't have a problem (configuration issue, already assigned to someone else) it will ACK and renew the lease, otherwise send a NAK and the client must then request a IP.

On my DSL I regularly get the same IP back, so I believe Telkom uses a similar setup to the one above. If you specifically put in a IP your router will ask for that IP. If you miss it once, and it gets assigned to someone with a different 24-hour disconnection time, you won't get it back, as it's leased to a different machine.

And as Clipse said, this only works till you're capped anyway. Then DHCP will refuse to assign an uncapped IP to you.

This would be true, except that ADSL as far as I know uses RADIUS to give you an IP lease and not DHCP, this lease is allocated from a pool on authentication and a route is then alocated for your PPPoE tunnel (a yourip/32 via dev pppX sort of thing).
 
so the question is, are you capped yet, and have you tried to set the ip then?

I am not capped yet... but changed the IP address to a few other numbers without problems ;-) but I didnt say that :->
