Sulphites - allergic/intolerant/sensitive

My mom had this, had to avoid most fruit juices. Started coughing (30mins - 2hours long) when she drank anything with too much sulphites. Always carried celestamine with her but then she was also allergic to bee strings.

Interesting, I'm also allergic to bee stings and have the same asthma like reaction to sulphites.

Monday bump, anyone else have this problem?

Thought I’d list the symptoms I know of, there may be others, and the symptoms can be indicators for non sulphites too.

Runny nose
Itchy skin
Dry cough
Hot flushes
Night sweat
Asthma
Swollen tongue
Irritable bowel

Pretty good AI summary of symptoms:

Sulphite sensitivity or intolerance causes respiratory, skin, and digestive symptoms, most commonly affecting people with asthma. [1, 2]

Main Symptoms
    • Respiratory Issues: Wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing, and nasal congestion or runny nose. [1, 2]
    • Skin Reactions: Hives (urticaria), skin rash or dermatitis, and facial flushing. [1, 2]
    • Digestive Problems: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. [1, 2]
    • Other Signs: Dizziness, fast heartbeat, and difficulty swallowing. [1, 2]
    • Severe Reactions (Anaphylaxis): In rare cases, sulphites can trigger a severe, life-threatening allergic-type reaction involving throat tightness, swelling of the lips or tongue, and a sudden drop in blood pressure. [1, 2]

Who is at Risk?
    • Asthma Patients: About 3% to 10% of people with asthma experience adverse reactions to sulphites.[1, 2]
    • Non-Asthmatics: Reactions can occasionally happen in people who do not have asthma, though it is less common. [1, 2]
    • Mechanism: It is a non-allergic hypersensitivity rather than a true IgE immune system allergy, often triggered by inhaling sulfur dioxide gas released when sulphites mix with stomach acid. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Common Sources of Sulphites
    • Drinks: Wine, beer, cider, and bottled lemon or lime juice.
    • Foods: Dried fruits (like apricots and raisins), processed meats, pickled foods, and pre-prepared potatoes. [1, 2, 3]
