Syncing documents & emails between 2 laptops

Hi

So, I had an armed robbery last month.
I've replaced both laptops that were stolen, and want to set them up properly this time.

What do yo find is the best way to sync files and emails between the two laptops.

My documents don't require too much storage space.

I have an MS Office sub which comes with 1TB one drive storage and also upgrade my Google drive account which gives me 100GB - that's prob also enough for documents.

After the robbery, I managed to recover all the important documents from Google drive. Although my main work laptop was later recovered. It's an old Dell Latitude - still works perfectly, but I have decided to clean that up and give it to my sister.

Currently emails are set up in Outlook using imap - although when I log into the VPS I see that mailbox size is growing, which may cause a problem in the long term. A friend said I should look at Proton.
I do need business emails on the phone too - am using the outlook app for that.

There are numerous email options available in the market, and the choice typically depends on your total number of mailboxes and storage which impacts your costs. For ease of use, Since you already have services with MS and Google I would recommend considering Office 365 or Google's G Suite. Migrating your existing mail is fairly straight forward.

In addition, it is worth considering implementing some form of disk encryption, such as BitLocker, for the new laptops. This will provide an extra layer of security. Setting a BIOS/Boot password would also improve overall security.

If you wanted to go a step further you could also opt for a cloud backup service such as Backblaze or Acronis.

IMAP is the best way to synchronize mail between different devices so what you are using is the best method, how ever your increase in storage is part and parcel of using a mail service thats hosted online, and not very different to using POP where you local pst file increases over time. This wont change unless you are actively deleting unwanted and unimportant email.

Sharing files between the computers is outside of the scope of my expertise but Im sure some of the others on here will be provide some expert advice.

Proton is a privacy focused mail service, not sure how this pertains to IMAP services but your friend inst wrong nor right.

I use https://syncthing.net for syncing files between multiple computers...

You already have it in the cloud, just keep it there and you don’t need to sync anything.

Syncthing https://syncthing.net/ ,it just works and can sync between your laptops without needing cloud hosting.

My personal choice is 2TB Dropbox account, files are always on two machines, plus a cloud backup, and you can do rollbacks if needed.
