Telkom 4Mb Line too fast for IS

I use Mweb as my ISP / use Telkom 4Mb Line (theoretical as I still cannot get speeds of a quater of this!). I was tired of boosting my 12Gb Cap every month (we download / upload large CAD files and I have kids who are gamers). So we upgraded to "UPCAPPED" with Mweb - starter version. Since the change about 3 weeks ago I have had endless hassles with speed / latency and I am having to reset my router 6+ times a day. Logged this with Mweb. I have been given the following reasons for the bad speed and connection problems:
1 - upcapped uses satellite for international bandwidth wheras uncapped doesn't - still doesn't explain why downloading email from Mweb is slower.
2 - My 4Mb line is too fast for IS (all of a sudden IS supplies my ADSL and not Mweb even though I pay Mweb) - I need to downgrade my line to 1Mb in order for their routers to sync with my line which is why I am having to reboot my router all the time. (This is assuming my line ever reaches 4Mb anyway).
I am no expert but surely my connection is not a direct connection between my router and IS and surely you have thousands of routers all over the worls all coping with different line speeds - how do they manage to stay sync'ed? Can anybody help as I am struggling to get any work done.
 
This sounds very blurry to me.

Daytime surfing deteriarates line speed by a large degree. So that speed of 4mbps will only be reachable for stuff downloaded at night most likely. Try downloading something from games.saix.net's file vault. That should give you a good stream to test the speed with.

The router resets won't have much to do with the account switch. It would be odd if that has anything to do with the router seizing up. Maybe a good firmware update for that router could sort you out.

If mweb didn't do their housekeeping well that mail download may well happen via satellite. ;) Thus it would be a bit slow.

The IS story seems like total BS to me. What your line syncs at and what speed they give you are totally irrelevant unless you sync only at 1mbps which would mean they cannot go faster. If you are capable of 4mbps downloads and their system can give you only 1mbps then that is it. They have nothing to do with your sync

Your line will sync with Telkom infrastructure before you even do a pppoe negotiation with IS or MWEB.

I would look at the quality of your line and router. Start with the router are the root of all evil first. Put a BIG suspect NUMBER 1 sticker on it! ;)

Firstly, Coment (1) is true, but only in certain instances, your latency (The time a packet takes from your pc to the destination & back) will increase because IS uses Sat for international. The true reason your speed is less is because you are loggin on via the IS backbone, and theres a peering link between IS & MWeb (Like say a 10MB line linking 2 LANS at a lan party) If that links capacity is running at full speed already, any requests are que'd and you gotta "wait in line" till those who made querries before you have been processed.

On comment (2), thats absolute hogwosh. I download any ISP (Mostly IS) at 410k/s average on my 4MB line, which works out to 1.5GB an hour. I've had more troubles on the SAIX backbone funely enough....

With regards to your disconect's all the time, there could be a problem with your line. See at what speed you are syncing, and see if it changes on a reboot.

If theres different syncing speeds, could be quality of the line issues, or a techi messed with your line, many reasons....

I have had my line checked by Telkom and it is not the problem. Mweb checked it as well through Telkom. Router is fairly new and supplied by Mweb - Billion model. All worked fine on capped, problems started the day after I switched to uncapped. All I wanted was the same as capped, except I was willing to pay double what I was paying to not have the hassle of watching my cap towards the end of the month and boosting. I don't understand why I need to use IS's backbone or go via satellite. If I look at the Diagnostic screen of my router - the "Testing WAN connection" fails and PPPoE says it is attempting to connect. Somehow rebooting the router forces it to connect, however if I don't reboot it does connect in time on its own. My gut feel is they are talking BS and the problem does not lie at my end.
 
We have had nothing but endless problems on IS uncapped solution. The packet loss is so severe we could not download mail from our Verizon hosted server. Downloads were impossible and international mostly unavailable. DO NOT use IS uncapped solution - it is a load of hogwash. Forget the international satellite, not even local traffic works!

We eventually forced our ISP to change to SAIX and a receiving the 1Mb solution we were promised (yes its a 4meg line but mostly slowed to 1meg).

Yeah, that was one of my tests, on the IS uncapped solution it waivered from 5kb to nothing! Terrible, and I know it is not the exchange... Again, do not even bother with the IS uncapped solution - it DOES NOT work.
 
Ok - so who do I use - I need a VERY RELIABLE ISP provider as I rely on my ISP to earn a living? Can anyone recommend an alternative ISP provider - fast / RELIABLE / 24/7 / decent support / good for gaming etc etc - (I know I am asking for a lot but hey, I'll try my luck). Mweb is obviously no good as they use IS. I need approx 15-20Gb cap per month which is why I went for uncapped.

It does seem that the CAPPED accounts from IS function perfectly okay - and at high speed. Though I may still be guessing, I use SAIX at home.

I really do think that IS has overextended themselves on the uncapped accounts and that is the reason for the poor quality of service.

Hell, buy a small account from Axxess and see how it performs then increase the bandwidth... just a suggestion. :D
