Good day all,

We've got multiple sites connected using ISA server and ADSL lines (IS uncapped static IP service).

The VPN drops on average 6 times per day.

The branch users make use of Terminal services and for obvious reasons can’t work until the VPN connection is established again.

Is this a standard Telkom ADSL problem? Can it be that a brief disconnection can cause this or should I try looking at other causes?

We've contacted the ISP, they've swapped out routers etc., we have checked, replaced and tested everything that we can ... the only remaining component/party is Telkom.

Comments please.

Definitely not standard with Telkom...I stay connected for 15h plus without RDP dropping (IPSec VPN - SAIX ADSL, Verizon leased line). I assume you're using an IS supplied Cisco 837 - ask them to enable logging on the ATM interface to see if it is a line issue or not.

If it isn't it could be router, ISA, or IS network related. In this case, you should set up some pings (ping -t) that run to various hosts along the route you take to find out exactly what is the problem.

I'm monitoring about 10 sites with WhatsupGold. Using ping to test if the router is up and running. Most sites are 94% - 97% up, the site concerned 91%. Telkom just says everything on their side is correct.

ps It's the Cisco router

So is it only one branch which is giving trouble?

Phone IS and ask them to enable the ATM debugging on the router - it will keep a log of dates/times that the line disconnects/reconnects. This will give you more ammo when logging a fault with Telkom.
