Ok i will spare you all my instalation woes, save to say that finally i got ADSL installed this morning.

Am i happy? Is it what i expected? I am afraid for all of you waiting expectantly for telkom to grace you with an instalation date, happy i am not.

I did not believe the port shaping could be so restrictive. Let me put it this way skype is useless and WoW latency starts at 4000ms and spikes to 12000. Torrents, despite all necessary, ports forwarded crawl along at 2-3KB/s.

Browsing is great but i have not spent R700/month to have a web page open in 2 secs as opposed to 6.

So have the port shaping always been this bad or is Telkom simply bullying us for having refered them to Icasa over the adsl issue. It seems really ironic that within a week of icasa's report stating port shaping should be abolished the shaping seems more stringent than ever before?

Let me show you something:

There is a very interesting site www.testyourvoip.com from their faq

"We installed appliance-based Verifiers, that emulate very-busy, multi-line phones, in the network in locations such as Boston and London. The Java applet on your PC makes a call using the SIP call-signaling protocol to one of these Verifiers. The Verifier answers the call and then measures the quality of the "conversation." BrixWorx assembles all of the test results and provides you with the nifty graphs and tables you see when your test is completed."

This is the results i got a short while ago.

Upload to London:
MOS
4.0 / 5.0
(Best with G.711 is 4.4)

Codec G.711 (PCM at 64kbps,
20ms RTP payload,
80kbps IP BW)
Round-Trip
Latency 467 ms
Packet Discards 0.0%
Packet Loss 0.3%
Loss Periods
Min: 20 ms
Avg: 20 ms
Max: 20 ms
Random Loss
Jitter
Min: 0 ms
Avg: 5 ms
Max: 15 ms

4/5 is very good on this score and will result in a call probably better than pots - obviously shaping does not occur on the "up" loop.

Now the crux of the matter

From London to me ie download.
MOS
1.0 / 5.0
(Best with G.711 is 4.4)
Codec G.711 (PCM at 64kbps,
20ms RTP payload,
80kbps IP BW)
Round-Trip
Latency 467 ms
Packet Discards 0.0%
Packet Loss 25.5%
Loss Periods

Max: 100 ms
Burst Loss
Jitter

Avg: 6 ms
Max: 20 ms

Nice telkoms shaping is "loosing" 25% of my downloaded packets as opposed to 0% loss on upload.

Just as an aside on Iburst i routinely got a moss score of 3-4.

So what do i do? Ask telkom to kindly remove their adsl line and reinstall isdn?
Buy a shaped account? Patiently wait for iburst to cover my area at home? Get a nukecap account and then pay again for the bandwidth that i have already paid for once?

Jeez i am pissed off.

That's nuffink - try again tonight [22H00] and check the difference in your scores.
/Me suspects that Teklom are overloading the international network with VOIP calls which get highest priority during the day.
It's one of the reasons i'm so happie that ICASA are forcing teklom to shove port priority up their a$$e$.
Once this priority crap is done away with, we'll be albe to see the real conjested picture of teklom's fabulous 40 billion rand [guess] infrastructure at work.

I was chatting, or trying to chat to a buddy of mine in Bahrain yesterday with Skype, it was impossible and he is on a phat connection and I have 512/256 Telkom adsl. I eventualy gave up, and this was at about 1400.

Still got iburst use it at the "office" unfortunately dont have any signal at home hence the adsl.

Dont want to start a adsl/iburst war but i know which connection i would choose atm.

I think telkom started shaping even more recently. Intl torrents go at a crawl, and my VOIP quality has degraded significantly.

Im on 512 home and 30 gig Axxess,
This is why we need to know the contention ratio's
I want to know what I am paying for.

Telkom had network issues today (See my earlier thread - http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=24744). I have no problems using skype (skype->skype & skypeout). 512 Business with 30Gb Axxess

Cheers
Glipsie

Glipsie have you used skype today or in the past few days? If not could you just try the test no for me and confirm that that is working or not at the moment? Presently i can just make out what she is saying earlier it was worse.
