The great DStv rip off!

You should email them and tell them this. And which channels it's happening on. Or post in their forums.
They know about it, but they're continuing to push too much down a small pipe.

Next time there is a big sports event on, check the quality of the other channels, you'll see how cr@p it is.

Just in case you thought DSTV has got a great deal, here is the offering from Sky called Freesat for an once off fee £150.

No monthly fee
Over 120 digital TV channels including your BBC and ITV favourites, plus over 80 digital radio channels

Nope..The decoders were replaced about 2 years ago, the new version is firmware updateable (possibly even over-the-air)

Nope... the _smartcards_ were replaced about 2 years ago. The software on every decoder is upgradeable-over-the-air, but that's just the bits that show you the program title, EPG, etc.. The bits that do the MPEG decoding are chip-based, and not upgradeable.

Ah, that's why I don't notice it. I don't watch sports.

Oh man, that is a sweet deal.

Amazing what advertiser-supported TV in a country of 60 million people with disposable cash can achieve.

well DSTV is prety advertiser-supported, and i dont see them giving it away for free...

thats another thing... the amount of advertising on all of the dstv channels makes me sick! Just imagine the revenue coming from that... easly much more than what they are pulling from the subscribers each month adveritsing is BIG money!!

makes me wounder what we're actually paying for in out R400 each month..

Have to agree with you 100% here. Timed it during Mythbusters on Discovery channel one night and they showed about 4 minutes of ads for every 8 minutes of television.

We pay our asses off for their crappy offering, and they show just as many ads as SABC. Oh yeah, and to the guy that said the rand is strong: the rand is weak as all hell. If it had been 10 years ago people would be sh1tting their pants at how weak it is. Avg exchange rate to the dollar in 1995: R3.63, remember that the rand was still stronger than the dollar until the 1980's.

just because the exchange rate of one currency is higher than another, does not make it worth more/stronger.

I would say that the rand is stronger than the dollar from a consumer point of view.

IMO living in america and spending $200 dollars is more than buying that same product from USA and spending R1200.

On the topic of country price ratios, obviously a country with 300million people can offer services, ie TV, internet, etc for substantially cheaper than south africa ??????30million???????

just my opinions, no fact :D

SA has an estimated 47 million citizens. Statisticians feel its probably actually a lot more due to undercounting of up to 80% in some areas during the last census.

And no. The rand is a weak ass currency no matter which way you look at it. How could spending $200 but earning $3000-3300 (average american wage) - 6.7% possibly compare to earning R9600 (avg startup SA bookkeeper) and spending R1200 - 12.5%. There's something terribly wrong with your maths there. I took a high income occupation, most South African's don't even earn that much.

The rand had tremendous buying power from its inception in 1961 until the late 1980's when sanctions and political unrest started crippling its value. It was on an accelerated downward trend since 1994, that quickened even more after Thabo Mbeki became president and Tito Mboweni became governor of the reserve bank. The major fall came in 1999-2001 with 9/11, the Zimbabwe land reforms and the controversial aids policy all doing its bit.

Even now after the "recovery" the rand isn't a shadow of its former self. You don't believe the dollar is worth more than your rands? Have your american buddies come pay you a visit.

Try timing Laugh out Loud - you might well find that there are 8 minutes of adverts for every 4 minutes of crappy humour.

I have a serious issue with picture quality on DSTV. They are over-compressing the signal so that it looks like **** on any reasonable TV.

It is time they upgraded their system to MPEG4 in order to get better quality in the same bandwidth...

I have a Sansui 74cm flat and my picture is 100%. Signal quality is 100 and signal strength is at 75.

Use the menu option on the remote to check what yours is and if it's below 75 and 75 then get someone in to check it out.

Does the picture come through AV cables or normal RF? I find that on RF the picture is "smoothed" somewhat, so you don't notice pixellation that easily.

Apparently, this is what Sky has done - they use MPEG4.

I'm pretty sure Sky do not use MPEG4 - as far as I know the only TV provider in the UK to use MPEG4 is HomeChoice (via ADSL).

But Sky's picture quality is much better than DSTV's and they broadcast far more channels. I guess Sky have more satellite transponder space then DSTV do and there do not have to compress the channels as much.

But my major grip with DSTV is there Audio level problem. I wrote to them to complain and did actually get an email reply which basically stated the audio issue was subjective and it was me -- or there other reason was they have no control of the audio output of the channels as that is down to each broadcaster. I wrote back telling them they were talking crap but never got any more feedback.

Has this been made an issue by many people to DSTV before. I can't bare to watch it sometimes.

We get MNETONDEMAND OR KUDUCLUB.COM here in the UK for around £5.50 a month it has most of the programmes on MNET (Broadband) and covers most of MNET how much is a simple MNET subscription these days. Remind me to buy shares in DSTV these guys are making a fortune. Where did that blogger get the info from. I bet Rupert Murdochs sky does'nt pay 0.16 US cent for programmes. Maybe its time to start a website HELLTODSTV.COM

Timing it? Try watching laugh out loud and you'll be begging for commercials! Like a lot of mnet's local programming, its just painful to watch, so I dont.

Just get a TV with AVL (Auto Volume levelling) when the ads come on they stay the same as the rest of everything.

Remember the letters they sent out in 2001/2 ......

.....when the Rand took a hammering and went to R 12 -14 to the $, they wrote us some nice letters to say that they have to increase the monthly charges as the majority of their cost is related to US programming and having to pay in $$$$$$.

Funny how the price never came down again, the service is still the same, therefor the price should go back to R200 pm.

Just my 2c worth.
