The World's IQ = 86

I have no idea what my IQ is :/

- As I understand it there is a strong correlation with average IQ and income. I'd have to do some digging for the data though but I've run into this quite a few times.
- I know there is a direct correlation with IQ and many mental conditions/disorders. (i.e. Down's syndrome was mentioned, and I have run into the odd account of brain damage reflecting drastically lower scores as well - so in my view this is confirmed and is a strong indicator/implication for many other things philosophically and logically speaking)
- There appears to be other indicative characteristics due to average IQ though this is difficult to extract and confirm without other factors as well.

I would also assume a strong correlation with IQ vs. success in certain careers on average, as in I highly doubt you'd see a propensity for people in a sub-80 IQ "category" appearing in the field of theoretical and experimental physics - though I'd entertain a discussion on it.

Other things I've heard (unconfirmed) include:

- Average IQ is increasing over time. And even an IQ of 100 today is not the same as an IQ of 100 a few decades ago. I can't remember the name of that effect.
- There are IQ tests that are conducted without requirement for any particular language.
- Ashkenazi Jews are the highest IQ group on average followed by Asians. Thus disproving the notion that the IQ tests favor Europeans.
- Good nutrition and good upbringing may have a very small positive impact. But only a few points (3 or 5... somewhere around there) at most - but is a consideration.

And one parting thought that I may find a little disturbing... if the average is what you say it is, consider how many people are below that :( I wish it were not true though.

IQ is a colonial concept. Doesn't apply to Africa as most people from Africa can't spell it.

It warms the cockles of my dark little heart to see Peterson spammed all over the place in debates about IQ and psychology. :)

It means something on the low end. Sure from a certain point onward (90) a person is more or less intellectually capable. As in capable of functioning in the world. Reading fairly easily, adequate communication, useful mathematical skills, making a living (and even on the low end often enough making a living very well indeed). You know... Functional.

Below 90 you start skirting the borders of what can be called intellectually feeble. For example most Down Syndrome scores range from 50-70 with a fair number lower, and a relative few going as high as 80.

It's not a nice fuzzy thing, but it does have an effect, and one should not disrespect the hardships people who suffer from such have to endure by just brushing it aside as inconsequential. It's extremely important to note that so many things can push massive numbers of people into problem areas. Poor nutrition, poor hygiene, pollution, substance abuse by themselves and/or their parents. Even just widespread financial or other stress can have a pronounced negative impact - Although the effects of stress are often temporary.
Spot on. A high IQ is the ultimate goal of evolution. The problem is: the people with reeealy low IQ's can not see the problem, exactly because of their low IQ :(

how do you know the ultimate goal of evolution is a high IQ?

Because... The average IQ is 100. This is a standard. This is how it works. 100 IQ points is "standard average".

This was my understanding also. The headline did seem a bit flawed.

Evolution *has* no ultimate goal. It's a random process. Those who happen to survive any given set of circumstances pass on their genes, those who don't, do not. Perhaps a high IQ will have some correlation with the ability to survive, but it's in no way the ultimate goal. Evolution isn't some rational entity who can guide the process.

And many of those in societies with historically higher IQ's are so damned accommodating and noble that although they should see the problem they prefer to pretend everyone is equally capable. This is, ironically, a feature of more advanced intellectual endeavours. The development of ideologies and philosophies that recognize human rights and the equality of human experience combined with the abstract capacity to empathise with the condition of those in less fortunate circumstances has lead to a condition where it is utterly taboo to discriminate based on any aspect of culture or intelligence.

In the light of cold logic, though, what would be best for all humanity as a whole? Allowing those with higher IQs (>100) to freely assume the key roles in society unimpeded by political correctness, or dumbing everything down by means of enforced equality to a barely functional average 86 IQ where at least we're all equal?

If the world's IQ is 86, surely it needs to be rebased?

Actually with the welfare state the exact opposite is true. If you have a low IQ, the welfare state will enslave those with a high IQ to support your needs. Which means that high IQ people are discouraged from having children whilst low IQ people are encouraged.
