Thinking of Linux? Read this first

to be fair, hardware (e.g. vodafone HSDPA E220 USB card) does not work out of the box; it requires some work, but in general will work with some tweaking--this requires time (so not entirely free). Now this is not a Linux "fault" but hardware vendors do not cater for linux (the E220 box comes with Mac OSX drivers, but nothing for GNU/Linux.

All in all, the experience in Linux is not completely blissful, and can take some time to get it right. But once you have the way you want it, it a beaut beast to work with.

I'm not so sure that I agree with all the arguments in the article. One thing I now is that the Linux community must not forget to copy the things that Microsoft does well if they wish to remain on the map and one of the things the Linux/FOSS community is getting totally wrong is the lack of documentation.

The Free Software concept only works if there is real freedom to participate.

Lack of documentation? :D
Go take a look at how much documentation there is available for Linux software, then come back here...

That has to be the most incorrect statement of the millennium!

Have you ever heard the phrase "RTFM"? Where do you think it comes from? Yup, the Unix/Linux crowd...

Every single app or library on Linux, EVERY SINGLE ONE, has more documentation than Windows can shake a stick at.

Search Google for "The Linux Documentation Project" and that site alone will have more documentation than you will ever need or can consume in one lifetime, and this is not even counting distro specific documentation (wiki's, forums, installation docs, etc.)

Why would the Linux Community want to copy M$? Everything Linux has to offer at the moment is better (if not before) than M$'s versions.

As for the lack of documentation, that statement really made my day! Haven't had a good laugh like that in ages! :D

Linux is not for everyone, but once you've gotten used to it, and addicted to the power and stability offered by Linux, you'll wish you didn't waste so much time on M$ :D
