Third Party Devices (802.11b Access Points)

Check out www.miro.co.za

They've got lots of WiFi goodies incl. PCMCIA cards, Connectors, Pigtails, Jacks, Crimping Tools, Cables, Antennas etc. etc.

Of interest would be the Wireless Outdoor Bridge / Access Point
(Range up to 25 Km with Power Amplifier & Antenna) Unfortunately the cost is prohibitive (R8 375.00). Btw if anybody from ICASA is reading this... I've got a reaaaallllyyyy big garden. But just in case I'll ask the signals very nicely not to go outside my property and to look twice before they cross any public roads. [;)]

Miro also has a Weatherproof Enclosure (R 115.00)- This might help to mount your AP as close as possible to the antenna to minimise dB loss. There's a gas filled lightning arrestor (R400.00) etc.

The pricelist link on the products page does not work... so use the link on the Distributors page.

Now... I think the 24 dBi Grid Antenna is just what the doctor prescribed for my modem... The polarisasion is Horisontal and Vertical. It doesn't weigh much (Only 2.18kg & should attach easily to my TV antenna). Low wind signature. The only challenge will be to align it with the Base Tower. (It's beam width is only 8 degrees.) The price is not too shabby either... only R 1 245.00 excl. VAT.

Please post links to other vendors... I'd like to compare prices / quality etc. Thanks.

Old news anout the legality of Hot-spots:

Poynting's parabolic 20+ dbi antennae are way cheaper than Miro's Inkblot, and they include feeds. I dont think there is much difference between the parabolics and grid besides wind signature...
Also the WiFi gear is a lot more than Sahara's SMC stuff...

Thanks for the info Lewstherin. I'm a registered dealer at Sahara, so no problem with the SMC stuff. Planning to buy the patch antenna from Fastcomm / Poynting as soon as it's available. Just don't like waiting. (You only live once)[^]

Instead of twiddling my thumbs I'm trying to find alternative sources. Freedom = choice and Variety is the spice of life! (Don't tell my girlfriend I said that!)[;)]

Good luck with the install Ink - let us know how the process goes. Just be very careful about getting the right connectors and get the best antenna cabling you can find - those two things can make/break your install...

May your pings decrease and your connection become stable [:D]
