This HL2 preload is a killer!!!

Pr13sT, there are no maps in any the three cache files that I can see. I think the maps are going to be a big download, possibly a gig or more.

I don't play online. I only got the CS:Source beta as a preview to see what the Source engine can do.
 
I have to disagree there. Maps only constitutes a small part and i do agree that these will probably be in the last download but as to size i think they will be small. Vavle have got seperate texture files which all maps share, if there is a custom map (for multiplay) those textures will be downloaded seperately. All textures have been downloaded and all that need to be downloaded will be the actuall maps file which will be quite small. I don't think the final release will be as big as the preloads maybe a couple hundred megs at tops.

I hope so too, but there was talk about the whole thing being around 3.5Gigs or so. We've only got about 2.5 at the moment.

What I'd really want to know if if downloaders have to wait till HL2 hits the shops or can we turn it on as soon as it goes gold?
 
I stand to be corrected here but arent the cache files compressed. 2.5 gigs them would certainly expand to 3.5. Lol all this speculation, why can't they just release the game.

Interesting thing i heard was that there is a date written on the licence plate of the car in CS:S that is supposed to be the release date. Unfortunatly i don't have it so i can't check it out. Andre maybe you can have a look and tell me what it says.

And downloaders have to wait till official release so the game publishers don't loose out. Every one will get it the same official global release day (if it does not get released in sa on the launch then you can download it).

Unfortunately GFSCape (the util for opening .qcf files) doesn't seem to handle extracting everything. The .WAV's would not play for example. I'll poke around a bit more and see what I can find.

The .bsp files for de_dust and that video test level in CS:Source are each about 10 megs for interest sake.

It sure doesn't look like it.

When extracted it's about 979968KB.

The extracted files are actually smaller than the .gcf!
 
hmm, stange! but the thing is when extracted are the still encrypted. Maybe they use compression in the encryption. At the mo we have got 2.5 gig of 100% unuseable info. Wish they would hurry up and just release it :(

I just heard that there is a car/bakkie in the Dust stage in CS:S. the licence is supposed to have a date on it. Like an easter egg sort of. I don't know where it is though. the map is not that big though. have a hunt for a car/s and look at them all. May be rumour though :(

Some of the files are not encrypted. Text files and config files for example. JPG's seem to be encyrpted. The HL2.exe doesn't appear to be encrypted.
