Help with Thunderbird - SMTP problem

Hi all

hope anyone can help.

switching to thunderbird on laptop with connectivity via ADSL at home via IS.

i can get to my IS based account, receive and send using smtp.isdsl.net (to send) and pop.mighty.co.za (to receive/collect). when using OUTLOOK.

setting up Thunderbird. I can receive/collect email from pop.mighty.co.za, no problems there. but no luck in sending emails from Thunderbird when using smtp.isdsl.net

I have downloaded FREE SMTP SERVER and installed on laptop. when using this as the smtp server inside Thunderbird i can send emails.

have tried "use TLS if available"

I prefer not to have to use the free smtp server but rather the isdsl server.

anyone experience the same problems.

I have the same problem. I recently changed from a SAIX account to an IS one and while Thunderbird works fine with the SAIX smtp server, it totally refuses to send mail with the IS server.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ric.

no ideas. actually want to see if i can get in touch with someone at IS, old colleague, use to work there so time for old contacts to be phoned.

Ah might be very useful. If you have any luck, please post up here. It'd be super useful. I can't imagine that A) we are the only people using IS DSL lines and Thunderbird and B) We are the only two people that this is happening to.

Ric.

Hi JayT,

I have been running it on the 'No' setting and I get the same error as georgelza on 'TLS'. It is behaving as if the port number is wrong but I am using port 25 (I think) as it seems to think that the server is 'unavailable or refusing smtp connections'. However, I can telnet into the server and send mail from there and send mail on what appear to be the same settings in outlook, so the server is very much available.

Any other ideas?

Ric.

Are you using the authentication option by sending a username and password?

Use mail.openweb.co.za, port 25, no authentication.

I had a problem using smtp.isdsl.net & smtp.openweb.co.za so i used the settings above and it worked.

Still doesnt work....do u have to have an openweb email to be able to use these settings? Im using openweb as an IS tho

I'm on Webafrica IS and I'm having issues too. It angers me. Basically just looking at it, Thunderbird connects to the server but then sits there waiting for some reason. Its almost like Thunderbird is waiting for the OK from the SMTP to start talking to it.

I personally think its IS's SMTP. They are running Exim 4.68. Maybe one of the IS people here can shed some light for us....

We'd really appreciate it :(

I had the same issue the past few days. I moved from a saix to an IS service provider and suddenly Thunderbird wouldnt work anymore. It connects to the smtp (isdsl.net) and then just sits there.

I found the answer to my issues on another thread in these forums: Disable email scanning from your Antivirus. This makes no sense to me but it worked for me and some others. (I use Avast)

Hope this helps
