To old to enter software development market?

I was in a similar situation. I practiced law for 13 years. At the end of 2017 I just couldn't take it anymore. I had no background in IT at that stage. I started learning web development and in September I got a project as freelancer. I worked for that company since March this year when they had to close due to the lockdowns worldwide.

So, yes it can be done. I'm looking for something now again. One thing I've seen is that the pay for junior devs here (if you manage to get in somewhere, which I've realized is almost impossible after applying to many places) is far less than abroad.

What is the pay like for jnr devs with +-1 year experience in South Africa?

I've heard anything from R12k to R20k. Company in Cape Town I interviewed with last year offered R12k, place in Pretoria offered R15k and a place in Midrand R20k.

Now for example on Upwork you can earn between $10 and $15 for entry level work. There are projects that offer more, some offer less so that is a ballpark.

That level of variation is only the tip of the iceberg. Once you vary country, sector, and type of dev work, starting salaries can easily differ by 10x.
 
You may want to google the importance of paragraphs first before you try and enter the software biz.
 
You're never too old to start anything new. Get your hand off your dick, spruce up and make plans and goals and stick to your schedule.
