This has got to be one of the pointless posts I have ever made, but it was fun!

because:
- Microsoft has had years to monopolise their product and use tactics to ensure that they get sole distribution with a lot of manufacturers
- Microsoft have a product which is familiar to the world
- Linux isn't marketed or publicised to any degree comparable to that of Windows
- Linux is seen as the ubergeek OS and the public has the perception that it's all commands and console, matrix-style
- Windows come pre-installed/OEM on the majority of new pc purchases so people don't see or even need a reason to switch
- A looooooot of people aren't aware that linux distributions are open source and free
- A looooooot of people aren't aware of the benefits of switching to an open-source, free alternative

With that said, I still think linux is a long shot off coming close to providing the usability and friendly nature of Windows. I use Ubuntu on my server/development machine and it does everything perfectly. I have to occasionally hack around to fix things and this is an immediate deterrent to anyone who wants an alternative to Windows. I tried Ubuntu on my laptop and landed up switching back to XP. The main reason was that I couldn't adapt to or find alternative linux applications where as software simply looks good and works on Windows.

At the end of the day, I like having Ubuntu on my server and prefer having XP on my laptop - it works for me and each provides a different function.
