Ubuntu 14.04 performance

The first (i.e. easiest) thing to try is right clicking on the panel across the top of the screen. Select "Add New Items". Look through the list and select "Indicator Plugin".

Did that. Sorted out the problem temporarily. Then the plugin was failing. So had to remove it.

I had Mint installed on my wifes netbook. Lenovo S10-1. Same hardware as OP stated (Atom, 1GB etc) She used it for over a year, no problems.
She's currently on Windows 7 and it's stable and fast for a 6 year old netbook with that stats. She wants to go back to Cinnamon, she apparently likes the music library...

Not keen to go to Windows 7 - have to pay for that :(

I am not finding Xubuntu difficult to use or setup. Its come a long way since i first tried it.

I must also admit, installation was fairly easy (apart from some issues getting my machine to boot from the USB). Then going from Ubuntu to Xubuntu was simple too as per the instructions in this thread. After that i didn't have to fiddle too much. I was expecting to have to play around with the setup for a long time before it was running 100%.

Its been so easy that in a way, it was almost too boring to get it going LOL!
