So I had a few more suggestions from a friend over the weekend. Deleted the old install to get rid of all the changes I had been making, and installed a fresh copy. No other changes except changing the MTU. After fiddling around for a while, the highest number I can make this is 1394. Anything more and pages stop loading again. So while I'm happy to have a working connection, anyone want to try and explain why it doesn't work on anything more? MTU in Windows is 1500.
