Former head of Gauteng forensic services Dr Reg Broekman describes South Africa's huge number of unclaimed dead (about 10 000 bodies a year) as a "humanitarian crisis".

Gives you an idea of how many people are out there though. How many people would be wondering where you were a day or two after you didn't pitch up home/at work etc?

Well seems we have thousands of missing people a year. Seems part of the problem is there is no way of tracking all the mortuaries (if you are missing somebody.) Uh. In a perfect world this could all be automated. Uh. You know facial recognition software tied to ID books. Anybody seen George O lately?
