Is Uninet an option to consider? How good is their service?

So far not good at all. I am still waiting for a return call from this morning

Dunno if its still free, but when it was, i used it in knysna. Was quite okay, just at night was a bit busy and speed falls.

But i guess that was cause it was free and too man ppl were using it

Let me give you the low-down on UniNet.

They were good up until halfway through 2008 when they decided to introduce capped packages... ever since then, all uncapped users suffer slower speeds.

I now typically get 1 kBps on my 10 kBps (128kb) connection: this means that most of your connections time out; downloading an e-mail takes about a minute or two, loading a Facebook profile takes at least 5 minutes, watching a YouTube video could take up to an hour. This is about as bad as a dial-up connection on a bad phone line.

The really sneaky part is: I'm tied into a 3 year contract and their legal fineprint most probably covers their back since 128kbps is not a "guaranteed" speed.

I am left in utter disgust after having to complain to them several times in the past, and yet I still need to deal with this pathetic service regularly.

I strongly advise those of you considering UniNet to reconsider your choice.

i was on an uncapped product and it was terrible

i am on 3 gig capped product now and i have no complaints - the speed is good and as a subscriber i have experienced nothing but good service.

it seems as if Uninet are only bothering with their capped services then and trying to make everyone else leave. i and a few friends have uncapped from them since 2004 and while there've been problems in the past, its gotten to the stage now where they totally ignore us. The connection is practically useless (as mentioned above, websites timeout, gmail often won't load, Remote Desktop to work is so slow that i can drive there and back to fix something quicker than trying to use their "service") - and that's just a few examples off the top of my head.

worse though, is that any communication to them goes unanswered. When calling in, if you're lucky enough to talk to a techie, you get bull****ted and/or lied to. between me and a friend, we've had 7 emails to support unanswered in the past few weeks. If you do manage to get through to someone senior, you hear the same ol' contention ratio bull**** that David Jarvis blurts out whenever their network is broke. Uninet's definition of a contention ratio is to provide the absolute minimum contended speed for 100% of the time. So basically you're paying them for a dialup speed connection, and most times struggle to even maintain that. and i'd even be happy with dialup speed sometime if the damn connection would JUST WORK. Opening 2 IOL pages and then sitting for 5 mins watching them timeout is something I didn't even experience back in dialup days!

i actually told them to go and **** themselves and cancel my account about 2 months ago, and i don't think they even bothered to read that one, cause my line is still up and running.

If anyone is thinking about getting an uncapped connection from them, don't waste your time or money.

I can deal with broken networks, but I detest being bull****ted and ignored by a so called service company.

Yea i know how you feel, the uncapped was shocking - hence the switch...now i just use my work network to download my stuff

I was with Uninet a couple of years ago. I can tell when the connection was on it was usable and fine, however there was the very frequent interruptions in service and every now and again it would go down on a Friday evening and only be restored on the Monday morning. It took them about a year to take us seriously and replace the antenna that we had as it was clearly faulty. After that we didn't have as many outages but still had at least one a month that would last a good couple of hours. Personally will not use them again.
