VGA Ram

yes, ddr3 would be the better option, much faster. think i'm a bit behind, running 2 x 7600gs extreme 256MB cards in sli - ddr2, all games playable, so no worries

no wonder my card still runs fast it's a x800xt platinum with 256 DDR3 and almost a year old

People its not the type but the speed.
500MHz GDDR3 is slower than 800MHz GDDR2.
500MHz GDDR3 is same speed as 450~470MHz GDDR2!

Advantage of GDDR3 is that its much much cooler than GDDR2 (you can run upto 1900MHz+ without cooling. Has lower voltage requirments, low termination voltage, better strobe signaling etc... Hence can scale much farther. (Also due to even less restrictive timings compared to DDR1/GDDR2)

Having said that go with the faster ram

Nope, i would also go with the 256MB DDR3. It's faster, and cooler. No need to even put PASSIVE cooling on DDR3. In my second machine i also have a X800XT Platinum Edition and it's got no cooling whatsoever on the RAM, and it's a speedy card.

But how do you know its faster? he said 256MB vs 512MB, he said nothing about speed...

No, he said 256MB OF DDR3 or 512MB OF DDR2. There's quite a difference there.

But like i said, the difference lies mostly in power consumption and heat.
