Hi guys

I've logged this one, but who knows if they'll be able to help, so I thought I'd ask the experts:

I can connect to GPRS using my PC, Nokia 6020 and a CA-42 cable with Nokia's software. With a Vodacom sim card, it works perfectly.

With Virgin, it connects, verifys user and password, and gives me an IP address. There is no error or anything. I can ping the DNS servers (which are on a different subnet, 196.x.x.x as opposed to the ip I'm allocated on 10.x.x.x) but I can't browse or do anything else! Firefox just tells me "connection reset". Command line FTP just tells me "unknown error". Its almost like the routing is screwed.

I had some issues with settings when I first put in the Virgin card, I got the settings via sms from them, saved, made default, edited the access point to be vdata, but still this!

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Do you have the "string" that you must put in your modem settings?

Hey Piesang, I don't think so - what string is it? Where must it go?

Thanks Piesang, your advice worked perfectly!

I had to make sure the phone was connected, then I could access the advanced tab and stick in the connection string.

Virgin was of no help whatsoever despite multiple phone calls to them; then again, I wasn't expecting them to help me. Customer service in the telecoms industry? HA! Even after I logged calls with the tech department, I got nothing.

What would an ordinary user have done? I work in the IT industry developing network enabled software applications, and even that was not enough to configure this by myself! I would hardly call my configuration unusual, Nokia phones are commonplace in South Africa.

So ya... if it wasn't for the cheap data prices there's no way in hell I would go through all that for Virgin, when Vodacom works perfectly plug-n-play.

Virgin must shape up their customer service. Customers shouldn't be ignored and then have to seek help on forums!

I don't think the string is just for using Nokia phones - it will be for any phone. On that point though, i also contacted them when I first set it up and they did supply me with the initialisation string - maybe the helpdesk clerk was having a bad day - or relieving for someone that actually knows something. :)

Hi capdog

I'm glad I could help. In the future please do read the other posts on the forum. The string is in a few threads already. Virgin Mobile supplied us with the info and that is why is was posted on the forum. I see you are new on the MYADSL forum so I understand, I also asked everyone for infon in the beginning instead of searching for the answer on the forum.

If you don't get a answer, please don't hesitate to ask.:D

I did try search, but unfortunatly I could only search for the symptoms, and I didn't find anyone who said they had a similar problem (or maybe my search terms are wrong).

Credit to Virgin, the tech guy did eventually call me today.

They should build up a knowledge base that 1st line support can access, so that people can get the answer as soon as they phone the helpline!

Thanks guys. I'm pretty stoked so far, it's cheap and fast. :)

The nokia phones in general dont need a modem intialisation string, but motorola's and samsungs genrally do. everything should stay the same expect for the apn in the last set of "..."
