Switch to Virgin and keep your number

Number portability is being introduced in September 2006

Online porting request
coming soon

Says this in the top left hand corner on the Virgin website (http://www.virginmobile.co.za/). That'll be conveniant - to apply for your number porting online! At least one operator is making an effort to educate the public:)

Yip, Vodacom has been ready for this for a while - just waiting for it to come into action. It's gonna be goooood.

Yummy... is Vodacom gonna give me a free handset if I transfer my two contracts from MTN to Vodacom? LOL

I have 5 MTN Contracts that I will move over to Virgin Mobile.:D

People people - this number porting thing - I am sure that you cannot move your unfinished contract from one provider to the next. You have to finish your current 24 contract with your service provider and then only can you move your number to another Network i.e. you have not got any further obligations with your current provider - you cannot move a 24 month contract that has been running for say 12 months with Vodacom to MTN - of course if you pay the penalties you could probably and with a Virgin contract it is different as its not locked in for a certain period as long as you pay the phone off you got on credit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that is the way I read this.

I just phoned Vodacom Direct.... the consultant said I will be able to move even if I still have a contract...

Lets asume I move from MTN, and they charge a "penalty".. Im sure Vodacom would try and solve that in order to win me as customer, lol.

Anyways, since its going to be LEGAL to move, Im sure they wont be allowed to charge a "penalty" fee anyhow.

Regardless... according to Vodacom you will be able to move at any time.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.... I doubt if, in yr above example, Vodacom will pick up the penalty just to get another customer.

You can move, even if still in contract, and your present SP cannot stop you. However, even though it's legal to move, it is not legal to break your contract, thus the penalty is essentially the remainder of your contract.

Another SP may be prepared to pay the cost of getting you out, however they'll probably take from what they would have given you on a free phone.

The photocopier companies are a great example of 'copier portability', you can move to another compnay as often as you like, even while still in another contract. However, you as the customer are then charged the entire remainder of your previous contract and this is included in your new contract.

net effect, you pay for both contracts anyhow...

And the reason given for the delay in implementing MNP was that the notworks, including Vodacom, were not ready

Number porting is just that, moving your number. Providers may decide to offer to take over contracts, but that is a separate issue. Most likely you'll be expected to pay the penalty.

Would be a smart move i think if the new service provider "helped" you buy your way out of a previous contract but you can bet your own mother on the fact that they'll make u pay it back somehow like adding it onto your new monthly contract.
