Just got a e-mail from Darlington (Data Support - Virgin Mobile).

They received the new sim and tested it with the MTN Data Card and it is working perfectly.

New sims will be available soon to collect at your nearest Virgin Mobile dealer.

I'll keep you guys posted.:D

Great stuff!!! Thanx Piesang ... at this rate you'll be an apple soon :)

Can we swap our old cards for the new ones or how is the exchange going to happen?

Yes please

That is good news. Now we just must get the new SIMS.

To Cell Compaies

Please take note that if you are a cellular comapny in SA then you will struggle to sell a product that delivers 1/3more speed(3G vs Edge)) at 4 times the price. Time for prices to drop by a big margin.

HSDPA is great, but at the cost wont be used for general browsing and email where EDGE does just fine.

That's good news! :D

I hope they'll also work in Vodacom data cards...

With a bit of luck I might be able to recieve EDGE in my area... haven't been able to test yet as I don't have an EDGE enabled cellphone..

Now I really wish they'd hurry up and release those new sims...

I just upgraded my Novatel Merlin U740 datacard's firmware, the new firmware correctly displays different colours according to your available connection ;)
Inserting my VM simcard the led flashes Magenta, Magenta = EDGE! :D
Both Vodacom and MTN simcards just give me GPRS (Green) :(

Kind of strange that VM (and consequently Cell-C) offer me the fastest connection..

Any word on the new sims yet? When will it be available?

Got myself a pre-paid Cell-C simcard to test EDGE...
I do indeed have EDGE in my area :D
Although the speeds are not entirely consistent... it goes right up to about 240 kbps at times for brief moments and sometime drops right down to about 40 kbps...
It mostly sits around 80-120 kbps though... which is quite an improvement in my case ;)

I have not yet upgraded firmware on my Merlin U740.Do you know if this could cause it to be locked to Vodacom?

Sorry, just to confirm/summarize what I've been reading in the various "Virgin Data SIM" threads:
Is there a problem with all Virgin SIMs, or only the 128K SIMs, when used in a 3G device?

(I have a 64K SIM, which works perfectly in my phone, but I've tried everything I can think of, including the tips & tricks on the forum, and it doesn't work in my MTN E620.)

It won't work. You'll have to wait a couple of weeks for the 128k replacement cards.

All good and well. But still no 3G or HSDPA for Virgin.....LMAO.
I'll stick to the proven networks thank you very much !

What software do you use and if its the Vodacom software, how do you set it up to receive VM edge? I would obviously need to start by buying simcard and airtime for R89. I sometimes go over the top with my 500mb vodacom package and don`t like paying R2 per MB,so this might work at 50 cents per mb and when my contract finishes in March I can use VM if they have HSDPA

I'm also staying with the "proven" network for 13 years now. And now?? I use Virgin Mobile because their GPRS and EDGE speeds are better than MTN and Vodacom's GPRS and EDGE and it's much cheeper.

And what 3G/HSDPA is concerned, I can't use it because MTN doesn't have 3G/HSDPA Coverage where I live and work.

That is very good for a "proven" network. At least Virgin Mobile doesn't advertise that they have 3G/HSDPA but there is no coverage. I think the "proven" network is something you can "LMAO" about. :D :p

I don't use Vodacom's software, as I use Linux :p

Of course the VM sim's aren't working in Voda data cards (just yet) but assuming they were, it would be no more complex than setting the APN to "vdata" ;)

3G is overrated. Why pay four times as much for a little extra speed?

Virgin has proven to be reliable and fast.
