VM Data.... I smell a rat

I think you are right - I retract my previous statement - I am not being overbilled.
I did a test & this is what happened:
Established GPRS Connection: VM subtracted R2.50 from my account
Started Data Transfer: VM subtracted R0.50 from my account
Disconnected: VM refunded me R2.91 (I did actually use 9c worth of data)
So maybe there isnt a problem?!

Does the VM sims work in data cards now? Last I read people couldn't get the VM sims to work in their data cards.

Trafeye: I'm using an old Nokia D211 data card that supports GPRS with my VM sim card it is works fine even though I was initially told VM sim don't work with data card.

I use my Virgin Mobile Sim in my i-Mate Jasjar and connect it to my Notebook as a modem.

Everything works perfectly. Fastest speed I get is 88kb/s (11kB/s).

Not bad considering it's using GRPS. The i-Mate Jasjar only have GPRS and 3G, no EDGE.

Wonder when Virgin Mobile will have 3G coverage?

Well, it is good to see these issues all being resolved, and that without the help of a virgin mobile representitve

They need to sort out their SORT ME OUT centre first.

I did find the first time on using my Virgin sim that the balance seemed to fall faster than 50c/mb. But then after disconnecting and checking the balance again a bit later, the balance was higher again and seemed more like the 50c/mb I was expecting. Why would this happen? Almost like they bill you at R1/mb and then refund you later.

It seems to me that doing a balance query while a data connection is active returns a bogus amount.

I have two ways I connect via Gprs, the first is with my nokia 7610 which has a reggretable 28 kbps modem, connection speeds with mtn or VM on cellC is 40 - 43 kbps with a transfer rate of about 1.2 - 3.5.

The other is with a Nokia d211 data card that supports Gprs only, connection speeds with mtn is 40 - 43 kbps with a transfer rate of about 1.2 - 3.5 I have stable connection strength of 100 %

On VM with CellC 40-69 kbps with a transfer rate of about 3.5 - 6.9 because d211 doubles gprs. I am in JHB with the d211 I can see my connection strength and and transfer rate accurately CellC in JHB fluctuates from 46 to 100 percent strength. In Ligtenburg which is 2.30 hours ne of JBH VM is on the Vodacom network I have a 100% signal strength but because gprs was down not only on VM's cellC but also on the shared vodacom network in Ligtenburg I was unable to get connection speeds.

So on Friday last I downloaded about 52MB using VM I still have 20 rand left from the 50 rand on the starter pack if nothing changs vm is the way to go in SA, I just hope that gprs will be avaliable soon and that with the increased users CellC will get its act together.

Sincerely

VM working well in generic data card at 50c/MB

For what it's worth, my original (64k) VM SIM works just fine in an older, UK Vodafone-branded Option GPRS card, and after checking carefully I AM being charged the promised 50c/MB. As I understand it and from my own experience, it is only the fancier 3G/HSDPA data cards which will not accept the standard VM SIMs. No problem in older or generic cards.

What I have found however, perhaps because I live in the bush near Rustenburg, is that speeds can be a little slow -- which seems to be the server/s, not the actual signal, as far as I can make out. Signal is fine, three bars on the Dashboard (or four with the external antenna) although it comes up identified as Vodacom (roaming) and logs in the Usage section as the grey-barred Roaming total, which is useful!

OT: anyone got an MTN EDGE card (the sierra wirless one) I want to buy a VM sim and stick it in there, anyone know if this will work

There's quite a few guys using the MTN EDGE Sierra Wireless card, including myself (got one on 'test' from the office, until the 128K sims arrive to use my MTN Huawei card).
Sierra card & 64K sim works well, I normally get 160-180kbps (last week VM speeds a bit bad though... in MTN range of 60-100kbps).
Only prob I have is the initial connection, which seems to take a while, sometimes need 2 attempts, but once it gets going, seems to go well. Data usage vs credit depletion seems correct.

Don't worry there's quite a few of them lurking around here already. I take it they're just waiting for some serious popo to hit the fan before they "officially" step in to defend the CO. :D
