Please assist,

I have a spanking new DELL D820, with a simm card access point behind the battery.
Apparently some consensus were reached between Vodacom and DELL to enable 3G; HSDPA; etc. on my laptop with the use of a specified simm card.
Who knows anything about this? It seems impossible to identify someone at Vodacom or Dell that knows anything.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Regards,
Hendrik.

If you already have a Vodacom sim card [e.g. in your phone] and wants to try that in your notebook, then call 155 and ask them to provision your sim card for data, otherwise buy a pre-paid Vodacom sim card from Pick 'n Pay and call 155 for data provisioning of that sim card.

Note that out-of-bundle [e.g. no bundle with a contract sim card, or pre-paid sim card] costs R2.00/MB, and that within a [contract] bundle 3G is less expensive than HSDPA. You need to ask 155 for HSDPA if you want to pay the higher tariff for HSDPA.

PS: Welcome to MyADSL :).

Do you like spam, Hendrik?
EDIT: meaning, why do you have an email address as username? You are bound to get loads of spam.

Did you get the DELL from Vodacom, or buy it somewhere else locally or overseas?

Reason for asking is that currently only Vodacom are able to sell the DELL 5505 HSDPA module. All the DELL Dx20 laptops have a SIM slot under the battery, however that does not mean it has the 5505 module in it.

Chances are if the drivers aren't pre-loaded (find in Start menu),all you have is a disconnected sim slot. The module sits under the keyboard so its also physically difficult to check.

I bought my DELL from DELL, South-Africa.
Wheninserting the DELL Resource cd, it first detects the hard ware and then you must select and install the software for each item. According to this and tis only it appears that this DELL 5505 HSDPA module is present?
But when starting the DELL mobile Broadband Card utility it does not bring up the activation screen?
When running the Vodafone Mobile Connect application it states: No hardware detected.
So on account of these last two instances, it appears that this elusive card is either not present or switched off?
Many regards and thanks for the reply.
If anyone knows how to physically check for it, please advise.

Hendrik.

As far as I understand Dell SA have not delivered any 5505s to customers ... Vodacom has exclusivity till Jan (I think).

As I said, you have to lift the keyboard ... its on the left, bottom (under left CTRL key). You may be voiding warranty tho, so do at your own risk.

Hendrik, I have opened mine up and it does not have the 3g module installed, I contacted dell but they say they have not yet got ICASA approval on the module yet, which is just another excuse while they bend us over and give us from behind.
