Evening all,

I am currently situated in the Natal Midladns for the next three days and I have discovered something.

I have never connected to the net with my Nokia 6260 via bluetooth and tonight I did and I am getting 115kbps. Now does that mean I am no longer getting GPRS speeds but rather EDGE speeds?

I thought only MTN offered EDGE?

Now that I am getting this transfer rate, I cannot justify why I should buy a 3G vodacom Card for my laptop if i can just use my cellular. It does the job and at a good rate. Besides the speed issue is there any other reason I should get 3G?

Mine also says im conected at 115, i donno why it always says that even tho the connection speed of GPRS is only 40kbps, do a speed test to confirm it, but im rather sure its just Windows that thinks ur going at 115.

I have just started using my Samsung D500 as a bluetooth modem using GPRS not 3g as I now have no coverage with any broadband service other than a Telkom Landline....which I wont be getting.

Anyways, I also connect at 115kbps (GPRS speed as Im told by vodacom) and while its not as fast as my Iburst its not bad at all. The only reason why I need/use it is when I need to send/receive mail at night so it saves me getting in the car with my laptop and Iburst and driving 30 kms round trip to the nearest signal.

However...the downside is that at R2 a MB I think its ridiculously expensive. I mean Telkom dont even have rates that bad!

Well, AFAIK Vodacom does have Edge and the coverage, according to vodacom3g, is better than MTN. I have 3g and am very pleased. I get very good speeds ie. downloads at 55-60kB/sec. But if you are getting such good speeds on GPRS(Edge) than its up to you. 3g is expensive compared to GPRS unless you purchase a pre-paid bundle to lower the rand/MB rate.

oh well, but if it is really 115kbps does that mean if i buy a 3g cellular i will get 3G speeds? Therefore eliminating the need for me to get 3G vodacom card?

vodacom does have edge - there are a couple of threads on that topic on this forum.

but the "speed" of 115kbps is just the port speed, unfortunately - you can do a speed test though by going to this site

are you on mtn, ploempie? cause with vodacom, there is no price difference between 3g and gprs/edge. what happens is that you pay for the amount of data used, not the type of connection (ie 3g/edge/gprs)

unfortunately vodacom pre-paid bundles, although imminent (as per v3g :)), have not been released yet, so you will have to live with R2-00/MB for a little while yet ;)

Your line speed is approximately 81.7 Kbps or 10 kBytes/sec

Not too shabby but i still think R2/MB is criminal

jarr: I'm on 3g One from Vodacom. I know that there is no difference between 3g and GPRS but as soon as the pre-paid bundles arrive (gets down on knees and prays) then it will be cheaper to buy a bundle rather than using the shocking R2/MB no bundle rate. :)

Wow are you sure thats not just the port speed you are connecting at, do a speed test and post the results...

Hehehe, guys guys guys, ur modem is set at default to connect at 115Kb, if you go to modem options you can set it to even connect at 921kb, that does not determin your speed tho. So u can just ignore that connecting speed as it only a modem speed setting.

Yep, guys...that 15 means nothing...u probably running at about 40 Kbps..do the speed test using that link given higher up on this page.
I did a test on 3g =
"Your line speed is approximately 332.7 Kbps or 40.8 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )"
