You can also use CloudFlare Tunnel (reverse proxy), it's free , and masks your public IP , so I would highly recommend doing it that way instead of opening ports, you will need a domain tho'.

Wow! That netbird does look pretty darn awesome... but you'd need a VPS on the outside to get it working...

Only if you are self-hosting. They have a free plan for their cloud service with 5 users and 100 devices which should be good for most personal use situations.

You could self-host on an Oracle free-tier VPS but as the control plane for these services is the element that presents a potential attack surface, for most people it would probably be best to use Netbird's service as they have the resources to keep the platform updated and secure.

If you want to be the Captain of your own Ship install a wireguard hub on a VPS.
You can use any wireguard client on the edge which includes openwrt, Tiks, Debian and even ubiqiity.
Another alternative is to use a reverse tunnel from the VPS. Openssh can do this. Typical bastion server setup.
If you want more flexibility and ease of use then try rathole.
