Having taken some time to successfully get a wireless access point connecting to a wireless router and distributing the signal further working, I thought I'd share a few tips.
I was using an SMC Wireless ADSL router, and an SMC access point (SMCWEBT-G). The router might need to support WDS directly; the SMC does.
WPA apparently does not work over WDS; I could not get it working. WEP works fine.
Get the latest firmware for router and AP; the router needed the latest to fix a WDS bug.
If the router has a wireless setting called WMM, disable it - that blocks WDS.
SSID on router and AP must be the same, an I used the same WEP keys for both.
