What is chewing my Gigs?

Easy solution...
Buy your kids world of warcraft.
They will play that 24/7 instead of watching Youtube.
Wow is amazingly one of the games that uses the least bandwidth.
About 4-10mb an hour if that.

Most people watch the videos on Youtube, they don't download them. So if the video loads and you watch, it's the same as on a 384 line, as long as 384 is enough to stream the video. So it might use a bit more on 4mb compared to 384, but this is also only for Youtube. Browsing normal sites or downloading what you want won't be changed at all either. Still don't see why there would be a big difference if you still use the internet the same way.

I think his point is, that you *won't* be using the internet the same way with 4mb.
 
I see where ehv is coming from. however given tabbed browsing surely you just leave the video loading in one tab and surf elsewhere while it loads. or watch another you had left loading.

for instance I don't think from iburst (1mbps) to Do3 has changed my internet habits. I just get what I want quicker

Viewing a streaming video = downloading it (in bandwidth usage terms)

If you're watching, you're downloading. That's how it works.

YouTube does not actually offer a means to download a video as a file. If you want to be able to do that, FireFox offers a plugin which will grab the FLV file. Then you have to run that through a converter to convert it to avi or wmv.

btw FPS games do use up quite a lot, even just a few hours a day. Especially if you only have 3GB..

Because on a 384 line you will sit and wait for hours for any streaming to happen even on a 512k line you have huge interuptions and can't really watch anything without constant interuption so you might allow the streaming to cache and then you watch while on a 4meg line streaming almost has no interuptions if you lucky that is so you end up watching more and downloading more.

So in your scenario we take one clip it will load 10 times faster on the 4mb line meaning the actual bandwith use up for the clip will stay the same for both 384 and 4meg, but while your still waiting for your first clip to load up on your 384 I might be watching 10 other video clips and thats why they say it uses more bandwith.
