Whats wrong with always-on dialup??

this is quite perculier... killadoob has not posted once on this thread, even if hes names been mentioned 2 times....

somethings wrong ;)

They also use the system in the UK - on the one I used to use I had to register my number with the ISP, Virgin, who charged ÂŁ12.50 per month which included the cost of any calls made to them. You just dial up when you want it with no additional charges. Very few people actually stay connected for any substantial period of time.

In the US its different - in most of the states local calls are free so you just pay your normal ISP charges.

skuzzy, maybe killadoob found the real killadoob and is still recovering :D

bwana, yep that's more or less the way I had it too, and with the high prices of ADSL, although it is regressing a bit, I think that something like that could be a solution to the ordinary home user. Given the speed is not that great, but at least the connection should be affordable. Now that said, I believe a servie like that should not cost more than R 100.00/month, ISP included.

Seeing that Telkom is so keen on supercharging rates (and profits), an affordable 64k ADSL service would be great - a lot of people would all of a sudden have internet access. There is no viable option but to concede that Telkom is a monopoly and does not intend to service the country.

It will need to be free so consumers can purchase 3G from their ISP's for R250 pm. Else it will be too expensive. Obviously, there needs to be a 1G deal at around R80 pm. This will be the obvious option for most housholds.

And worst of all: Telkom will make piles of money selling bandwidth at incredible rates to local ISP's as people start to slowly enjoy "Local is lekker".

You know what's scary? If they throw in uncapped bandwidth at R400 I would go for this despite the low speed. Using 6kB/s you should be able to get around 15GB of transfer in a month. ADSL needs unlimited bandwidth to be useful IMHO.

Currently paying R147 for line and Infinitcall + approx R240 for calls to be online all the time during callmore. Thus: ADSL needs to be less expensive than R400 to entice me. I don't care about speed, I just want uncapped bandwidth :D

Maybe I just have low standards, but dial up will do that to you.

Don't forget your ISP cost :

ISDN/Line Rental + InfinitCall + ISP + Calls

SO SO SO

WHO INSIDE TELKOM IS GOING TO LINK UP A TOLL FREE NUMBER FOR ALL OUR POOR FRIENDS -- LINKED TO SAIX?

:P Get a job at telkom, find an empty hole in a server room, or a login or whatever it takes, set it up.

I bet you could do it via telnet!!!

YUP! Be wary of telkmos defective i mean deceptive advertising!!!

HomeDsl192 = advertised as R279
What they dont say is line rental R80.70
ISP = R239
So the total is ~R600
If they dont sneak something else onto the account as well.

Wankers.

Advertising like that should be illegal. Isn't it?
Cant we sue them!?
Lets make a documentary....

Eish not sure it can be a documentary, more likely a horror or human-tragedy-drama-type thing. Oh and lately, read/listen carefully to their ad wording; just enough of the right stuff in there and too little of the real stuff :mad:

words like "boundless", "value", "full speed" and "Telkom" really <urinates> me off

Yes especially like the "boundless" one, is contradictory to everything they said at ICASA. :mad:

If you think about it clearly, this should have been done long before 24/7 broadband arrived...

Telkom hasn't implimented it because it will lose money...

Simple as that...

Another reason why we need competition!

Agreed

No reason why they shouldn't remedy the situation and introduce it now.
