Yo Craig,I am running a Dfi Lanparty -nf3 250gb
with a amd 64bit 3000 processor and gforcefx5700 - pretty old by standards now as my board is a year old.

The newer nforce4 is out as is SLI and Pci express but do lotsa research!!!

There are suggested boards for specific chips and they aslo recommend the Graphics card to go with it.

Well i would say if you get a mobo wich supports the AMDX2 processors and a Ge-Force 7800GTX you will be settled for some time to come.You'll score about 11000 points in 3dm05 and if your system seems to slow down... get another 7800gtx and run it in sli mode. ;)

PS: the 4800+ is still to expensive so i would recommend getting the 4200+, good value for money.

You have got to be joking. 7800GTX = R6800 plus that 4200+ is around us$550 that would be around R5000-6000 if I had to guess.(includes import tax etc) I would say go for an Nforce 4 SLI mobo plus a geforce 6800GT(you can get it for around R2500) and something like the 3800+. It should last you about 2 years maybe 3 if you are lucky.

[EDIT] BTW dual core is not that great atm, most apps wont use it. The app must be multi threaded. Don't fall for the hype. If you plan on running a lot of intensive proggies together then sure dual core would be great or if like me you render 3D animations(HUGE BENEFIT). Virtually no games take advantage of it. Remember if the mobo supports it you can always get one later when the prices drop. Never buy new tech when it comes out always wait, unless you wanna waste money.

Personally, i dont have ATi , but playing on it is superb, i can say that!
As long as my gpu works well and plays games smoothly theres no problem.
If something went wrong. ill might consider ATi

100% True, In the end it comes down to personal preference. ATI & Nvidia are both great. If you got the money Nvidia currently has the best card 7800GTX but give it a little time. 6800GT and X800XL are very close both good cards.
6800GT better though! ;) but only cos I have one ;) :D
 
For the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, u looking at R1400 and for an ASUS NVida FX6800GT, around R3500
 
if price ain't an option you wont go wrong with the nvidia 7800, but i would recomend the HIS x850xt for all out performace for just under R5k. it will happily do HL2 at 1600x1200 full AA arounf the 100fps mark... can't ask for much more
