Subject to crosschecking (with my laptop- which M&B did you try? (..or I could hit one at a mall)) I'm thinking you're failing to get anywhere meaningful NOT because of any fault with your PDA but with the way their system is setup. Specifically I suspect that they're running a captive portal which, on getting an initial web page, is popping up/under a second one (say for UserID/consumer rip off ..err: credit card details) that your PDA might not be showing, but would show up fine on the laptop.

Hmmm, interesting thought there on the pop-up. May well be right. Going to install the mini-firefox and see what is there to see.

I tried the M&B at ClearWater Mall - Roodepoort. Going to go there again on Thursday, together with laptop and give it a try. Was there on Saturday afternoon, and the environment was not suited for leisurely fiddling!

How does this Wififofum software work?? I installed it on my Jasjar but it doesn't pick up my own wifi hotspot (Linksys WRT54G).

- not being in the fortunate position of owning a PDA (..capable of running this kinda software or not :cool: ) I can't do more than suggest wififofum may not run properly on your toy and perhaps you should (also) look at ministumbler - see "stumbler dot net"

WiFoFum works really great on my K-Jam. Did try mini stumbler but wasn't able to detect any networks.

And yes, I was able to connect to the WiFi hotspot @ Mug & Bean. You need to register on the website that opens when trying to connect to any site. 10 minutes for free, then connecting via existing ADSL account or paying via CreditCard.

I detect several Wireless networks while driving - sure you have enabled your WLAN feature in Communications Manager? WiFoFum - Device = TNETWLN1

Start your own hotspot

I'm looking for folks who are willing to start their own commercial hotspots.

I love the idea of 'free' Wi-Fi hotspots, but I think when folks have capped ADSL accounts, it makes no sense to share your limited amount of bandwidth for free.

So we've created something in between the MWEB R100 per hour hotspots and the "free" Wibiki type hotspots (which you can't really find anywhere in any case).

How about the Hotspot owner sets the price? And in addition, the price is per megabyte, not for time.

2007 Hotsport Statistics?

I'm doing some research into the hotspot market. If anyone here knows where to find this research please point me in that direction. Specifically I'm looking for a breakdown of hotspots (total) for per province. Even if I can just get a total that'll be great.

My estimate is between 150 to 300. This is really vague and I think its more closer to 300 (excluding the home wifi networks).

interestingly ethekwini is rolling out free hot spots are all Libraries +- 85
there are some up and running but i'm guessing many to go.
 
I tried to logon today with my N95 at M&B, got to the logon page, but I guess a normal ADSL accout wont work there? Right..?

I have a ISDSL account, but it said invalid username/password. I was logged on from home already, so maybe its concurrent connection issue?

Dunno? Do you need a special wifi account.
 
Depends on who owns the hotspot and what networks its affiliated to.

There's a lot of unsecured networks in PTA, even managed to access a certain retail chain's network with my Kjam

The whole problem is that South Africans think of the "Internet" as some expensive, out of reach commodity.

Mugg and Bean only gives us 10 minutes free in Cape Town. Hardly worth sitting down for. Do you need any special software to connect or is it just an open network?
 
Free internet overseas, why not in SA??

I have just traveled to Taiwan last week. At every Terminal building, train station, bus station public toilet even, over seas (Hong Kong and Taiwan) I was able to get FREE internet wirelessly. Some hotspots require you to accept terms and conditions on the homepage, but free.
Sadly when I returned to South African airports, both OR Thambo terminals and Cape Town international I was expected to pay or use a passport account to access the internet.

This sux in my opinion, how to visiting businessmen and woman from overseas feel about having to pay for something they are used to getting for free in most parts of the world?:mad:
 
Constantia Village in Cape Town gives you an hour free net, or 50MB, which ever comes first, as a complimentary thing while you in the mall. I was able to get coverage on ny Nokia N80 in most of the mall, though using a small screen not pleasant.
