The developers of several popular Windows tools — including VeraCrypt, Windscribe, and Wireguard — have had their developer accounts suspended. The devs also report difficulties getting help, forcing them to take to social media to ask for help.
Sudden developer account terminations
Talk about a scary message
In a March 30 post on SourceForge, VeraCrypt developer Mounir Idrassi shared the issue and asked for any help or suggestions. Perhaps worse than the termination itself is how it went down: "Microsoft did not send me any emails or prior warnings. I have received no explanation for the termination and their message indicates that no appeal is possible. I have tried to contact Microsoft through various channels but I have only received automated replies and bots. I was unable to reach a human."
VeraCrypt isn't the only tool affected — Windscribe, WireGuard, and a number of others have also run into the same problem.
What's causing these suspensions?
Based on comments by Scott Hanselman, VP of Developer Community at Microsoft, the issue appears to be related to mandatory account verification for partners in the Windows Hardware Program. However, he also claimed that devs have been receiving emails about this since October, while developers themselves claim they have received no such communication.
Normally, I'd be charitable and say that, while unfortunate, sometimes stuff happens. However, given Microsoft's track record lately, it's tougher to take this attitude.
Windows has been under heavy fire thanks to continued AI pushes and long-standing issues that never seem to get resolved. Given all this, suddenly suspending the accounts of major Windows software devs isn't a great look. The whole thing is made worse by the fact that so many of the affected developers claim to have had an impossible time getting hold of someone at Microsoft to help.
Resolution seems to be in the works
Hanselman has said repeatedly on X that he's spoken to developers and that the issue is being handled. For his part, Idrassi seems confident that the issue will be resolved: "...there are positive signs that the issue will be resolved. Let's wait and see."
Windscribe's X account also responded to its post, saying that Microsoft is handling the situation:
That said, there has been no update yet from either Windscribe or VeraCrypt stating that the issue has actually been resolved. It would also be nice to see assurances that whatever oversight allowed this to happen will be addressed to prevent future problems.
Just renewed my subscription, and got a nice gift in my email - they've given me a complimentary month free of the full Pro service to offer someone else.
First offer goes to
@elf_lord_ZC5 (if he responds by Wednesday)
else to @BBSA if interested
else will be offered to first one of you to ask. (Yes, ask in advance if you want)
Nice to get something useful for free for a change![]()

Talking of which, I'm hoping for at least a 3 year special sometime. Noticed they did that a year or two back but it wasn't a good enough total - needs to effectively cost $29 per year or less to compete with their other discounts.
@Smiggles does your account have a promo code we could try?
Would be in My Account under the Data / Usage section.
(Ignore that it says something about 1GB usage, that only applies to free-usage accounts.)
Yeah, turns out according to their Garry bot, using any of those promo codes just helps the supplier, the user gets nothing extra :-/
Sorry @elf_lord_ZC5
