Someone sent me a ZIP file with a password. The password supplied does not work. Is there a way around this ?

Good luck with that. If it is not something conventional you need a brute force cracker /can take eons. Try Googleing the file name?

Zip files are EASY to crack. RAR files are impossible.

With brute force and a RAR, the program can only brute force 20 passwords per second (or something low like that)
With Zip, it can run at hundreds, or thousands per second....it's very fast!
some zip files will take you 5 -10 minutes.

I've never been able to crack a zip password - mostly because most of the brute-force apps are not freeware.

Best way would be to get the correct password from the person who sent it! ;)

If it isn't some private docs or something he zipped himself, try searching for the exact filename in google + the word 'password'. I've once or twice managed to hunt down the correct password for a klep'd archive this way.

Where did you get the file from?

If it is one of those BitTorrent files that you downloaded thinking it is a movie... it almost never is... it will probably be a fake file asking you to install some special "Viewing software" in order to be able to see it... which is usually a virus.

You are better off deleting it and getting another version of the file that is not password protected.

Not necessarily true. Newer versions of Winzip support 256bit AES, which is just as much of a dead-end as WinRar.
