Sounds like a fun task.
I've had an Xbox for about 18 Months and I love it. Here's my two cents:
1) Do you think it will work?
For sure! I think one big thing to show of is the 'arcade' capability. THough unfortunately you'll also have to explain to Joe Soap on the street how and why we don't have official xbox live support in SA.
2) What games should be played?
Racing: I would stay away from Forza - I have it and love it, but for a quick demo and quick plays for people maybe not so good. I would reccomend Burnout Paradise - graphics are jaw dropping, driving mechanics are fun, and people can literally just 'cruise' or do a quick event, and even crashing looks great. Little difficult to get some form of a 'competition' with this though. Keep in mind EA recently dropped the price of BP to R299 I think its a great marketing sell, especially with the added Bike pack update. So great marketing potential.
If your wanting to go the competition route, try one of the PGR racers?
Arcade: As stated before, for me Arcade is one of the best parts of Xbox, and the best part of arcade is Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2. This is GREAT for competition scenario - based on scores, you can have 'deadline' games (a game is limited to 3 minutes, and player has unlimited lives). The graphics is 'screen-melting' (To quote Penny Arcade) and FullHD support, so will look on large LCD display you will pu up at the stands. Also it supports anywhere between 2 and 4 competitive and co-op on the same console. Very easy to pick up and play game (Only use the two analog sticks)
Fighting Game: There is a wide range of possibilities. Dead or Alive 4, Soul Caliber, and Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit. I've tried out DBZ on my friends in a party scenario, and the game mechanics are easy to pick up and the graphics looks like your playing straight out of the TV series. Also, great for competition scenario.
3) What should we name the event?
Sorry, no help on that from me. I'd call my dogs 'Dog 1' and 'Dog 2' if I had any.
4) Of course having an exhibition like this will attract lots of people, what do we do to keep the masses entertained while they are waiting for the chance to play the three games?
Of the top of my head:
Free popcorn
Have a single large screen display of one of the more impressive games, or maybe cycling between the currently ongoing games. Geometry Wars and Burnout Paradise is great spectator friendly games. Another spectator friendly game is Assassins Creed, though the game mechanics doesn't lend it easily to this scenario.

I liek this, but I have my 2c worth as well (ofcourse).
First off, 3 consoles isnt going to help you showcase much. If you really want to show it off, have three consoles in a triangle for the racing game (showing the xboxes lan capabilities, enables groups instead of one on one and a bigger screen for people to watch.
Then have one console for a sports game. People - everybody loves sports games. OK - have 2 even. Big ass screens and bean bags for the 2 contestants. I know this will work, as my sister was working the EA games roadshow and the best watched game was fifa (though pes is better for playing, but harder to pick up - and fifa has full licenses... since this is a legit showing, no patches would be allowed. hate to say, but fifa wins out in this regard). the reason was because people watch sports anyway and if you have 2 people competing then others will watch it out of habit. in the case of the fifa game i played, the tv was in the boot of the car and a crowd of people were watching this (as opposed to the fps games which were the least played - sorry fanbois

the one fighting game between two people. id say tekken 5 just ebcause it is already massively popular due to the franchise starting out in the arcades and being much easier to pick up than soul calibur. and the action is fast paced - much m,ore so than the other games out there (havent played doa since the first one, so i could be wrong - but virtua fighter is a definate no no)
the other point is that the contestant must be comfertable and accesible to the crowd. the other reason why fifa was so popular was because the people playing were on bean bags and not those ultra comfy and good for the back office chairs (which are perfect for playing, but not at a marketing event... maybe a pro gaming event but thats a different story) its just a little dose of psychology. bean bags are ingrained as the party chairs of the world and people will be able to feel much more at ease than if the contestant was sitting in the same chair the boss uses. think about that.
as far as prizes go, you could give away xboxes to the top 3 contestant in each category, and add in extra peripherals for nos 1 and 2 as beffiting their position. extra hdd, control and two games for player no1 (games depend on the game they entered for ofcourse) and an extra controller for player no2 and the game he played to win the prize.
ummm.... yeah. i have loads more suggestions if you want - just pm me.

Just how exactly is he going to achieve that ?
! The student wants Gta5 on xbox nd u play tekken 5 on it ! It's starting to become a miracle machine (almost up to the same league as the hunger saving ps3) 
I'll be playing Gran turismo 4 on xbox live if any one interested add me as a friend

Maybe two screens next to eachother...one HD the other SD to show off the shiny-ness. Not as the main event of course. Not sure whether the difference is big enough though...I haven't seen a HD & SD xbox next to eachother.
I reckon you need some sort of big high-score board where people can put their name & be all proud. And the top person at the end of the day gets a....PS3. Natas is right though...make sure the prizes are big enough....and make it know.
Be sure to have back-up xboxes...public rrod isn't ideal publicity.

My bad, I thought that Namco released T5: Dark Ressurection as a downloadable game (and quite frankly, they should have). Havent really kept up with console news in a long time. DoA 4 it is then

for a fighting game I'd use Soul Calibre 4 - shiny new graphics and it's far more noob friendly compared to DOA4. - And better boob physics 
Alternatively there's this new "Battle fantasia" that just came out as a 360 exclusive.
Sport games are good - what might be a really good idea is FIFA's new 10 vs 10 mode and you can cross sponsor the event with a sporting goods store.
I say stay away from Guitar hero. In a public place, especially a mall, the noise is too loud and you can't hear the tracks making the game utterly pointless.
for you "10 best new things" the 360 is all about the software, and it's all about multiplayer. A lot of south Africans shy away from even thinking about playing online, so maybe a better idea is to partner with Telkom ADSL / Wimax /Neotel and position it as "take gaming to the next level kind".

One game that will show of the social gaming aspect of any console has to be Guitar Hero World Tour, it allows for up to 5 players at a time (if the bass guitar is release locally) everyone can jam together in a mini rockshow, there are online features, studio modes to create and share music....
This game launches on 7 November, so plenty of time to pitch the idea to the top brass
I recon 10 full HD plasmas, couple of stacked speakers, lights, cameras and a full rockshow to pull the masses around before you show them what an xbox can do.
