<br />I've tested around that area, but it worked everytime. Their database backend may have connection timeout problems.

If you look at the Menlo tower area, any of the stands between "The Koppie" and Kay avenue gives that error. the 2 small stands directly above "Menlo Park" is fine, the 1 to the right of them produces the error

To be honest, the Zone locator lies. Where I live, it said PARTIAL SIGNAL. Then I ordered, got it - got 1 light. Now it says NO SIGNAL... and the signal is stronger..

Rather get a signal test.

Are you advertising again?

The zone locator is really only a guess. It does not LIE. Its better than nothing at all and it IS updated now and then. It is however a useful GPS locator [:D]

Signal testing should always be free!!

I think it's fair to charge for a signal test as Donovan and other providers are essentially using their time and petrol to provide you a service. Also there is no guarantee that if you have signal you will sign up with whoever provided the signal test e.g. you could ask Donovan to come test the signal and then sign up directly with Sentech. Perhaps Donovan could waive the cost if you have signal and sign up with him? Just a thought, use it, don't use it [;)]

Donovan,

Do you connect to Tower 12 ? If so please give give me more feedback via e-mail.

I'm working with the guys at Sentech to get issues surrounding 12 sorted. I need as much info as possible to feed back to them

In that case yes, so essentially there should be a charge if he finds no signal. I think since the person will (because the service is good) sign up with say, Donovan, then the R85 should be waived. Obviously there should be a charge if not but R85 (petrol cant be more than R10) is a bit steep. It should be R49.

As a user of MyWi you know how valuable it is to test first so I believe we should "give back" in a sense and do free testing. Obviously not for everybody - I mean if you get really busy testing. If Sentech supplies Donovan with a 512k test modem+account then I can understand him charging (they should do this for a reseller)

For all new users or prospective users I would recommend asking someone you know with a modem to test rather than to pay. Sorry Donovan but thats just the way it is. I got a free test once and have and will gladly test for free for anyone in my area.

I sent off a e-mail to Sentech on the Spatial Query Failed thing, not really expecting any answer. But I was wrong. here it is:

Good day,

Unfortunately we are experiencing technical difficulty with
the zone locator. Please check again tomorrow as the
problem should be rectified by then.

Greedyflyza I agree with you, I am working the PTA region whereas Donovan works the Johannesburg Region as Agents and there is nothing wrong with getting someone you know that has service already to test for you whether you have signal.

The problem with the singal at the moment is that it is alsmost line of sight, there is talk that it is going to be fixed and will become like cellphone signal soonish but exactly when is not clear. AT present the singal is bouncy and geo-landmarks bounces the signal all over the place so people who should technically not be getting singal are and people who should arent because of hills, valleys, houses and even trees.....

So by whatever means just get the singal tested.... So your choices are....
phone a friend,
email myself or Donovan,
use the locator (it gives you an indication yes defincate or no-ish)

But get tested for singal so you can get off Landline ASAP... Thats why I did...

Why not make the policy to charge say R49 callout IF the BBZL says Partial/Good. If it says "No signal" then (to prevent people wasting your time) charge R79. If the person chooses to sign up (with you) then you refund them the R70 delivery fee. So in effect, you give them free testing. The above scheme sounds more fair to me.

Do you do testing with 128/256/512? If I were paying, I would like to see 512k and for at least 20min of downloading/surfing etc.

What are the conditions of your test(s)? Do you use any antenna (if no antenna produces zero signal)?

Hello,

Thanks Deon for mentioning our venture...

Greedyflyza, we test using the 256kbps package. What we do with a signal test is bring the modem, connect it to your pc, let it find a base station, connect to the internet and let you use the connection for a bit for whatever you want to use it for.

There is no obligation to sign up for a contract, however the fee is a flat rate of R 85 per signal test. This is not unreasonable (some agents are charging as much as R 300 for this). Unfortunately a broadband zone-linked pricing scheme isn't a good idea, as the administration of this would mean we are less efficient - instead of just doing the signal test, we need to then waste extra time determining what to charge a client. Also, the BBZ tool sometimes gives a person an indication of "NO SIGNAL", and their next door neighbor an indication of "GOOD/PARTIAL" - would you be pleased if your next door neighbor paid less than you, just because the BBZ tool said so?

We're more focussed on getting our clients online as quickly and painlessly as possible. If you call us for a signal test, and it finds signal, you can decide to buy the modem there and then and you will be online immediately on an interim user account (at 256kbps). Within 3 weeks (max), Nowire will allocate you a username and password, and your interim account will fall away. Nowire will start charging you once you have your own username/password, and you will connect at the speed you signed up for.

EDIT: We generally do bring a patch antenna with, just in case.

GreedyFlyZa I can see your logic and understand why you feel it is fair if a contract is singed after the test that the fee be waved. If the charge was not there abuse would occur, so finding a understanding middle ground would be the easiest on this subject, a charge exists to prevent abuse.

What are the conditions of your test(s)? Do you use any antenna (if no antenna produces zero signal)?

There are no conditions, A singal test is exactly that a test of strength of singal if the singal is poor a Patch Antenna is used to imporve it. If there is singal and the customer does want to sign up they do, if not then they dont....
