Ruling on SABC blocking DA advert delayed
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) announced in a press statement today (Monday, 14 April 2014) that it has referred the complaint brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to its Complaints and Compliance Committee (CCC).
Last week (Friday, 11 April), the DA complained that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was censoring the party after the public broadcasters received a notice to pull the DA’s political advertisement.
According to the SABC, the advert incited violence against South African police officers.
The DA vowed to bring the matter before Icasa, and Icasa had previously said it would rule on the complaint by the end of today.
Icasa has now said, “Following engagement with the parties, Icasa decided to refer the matter to the Complaints and Compliance Committee (CCC) for adjudication.”
The CCC is scheduled to hold a public hearing on 17 April 2014 “in an effort to expedite the resolution of the complaint,” Icasa said.
