Kindle DX pricing in South Africa
Amazon.com recently announced that it will start selling an international version of its larger-screen e-reader, Kindle DX, in an effort to snag more sales around the world. The company already offers an international version of the Kindle.
The online retailer said on Wednesday that customers in over 100 countries – including South Africa – can pre-order the latest version of the $489 Kindle DX, which has a 9.7-inch (24.6-centimeter) screen and will wirelessly download books in many places around the globe. The international version of the Kindle DX will begin shipping on January, 19.
Local online retailer Wantitall said that they already have some of the latest Kindle DX’s on pre-order, but that they don’t expect the new device to be as popular as the smaller 6″ Kindle. The new Kindle DX will sell for R5299 at Wantitall, which is far more expensive than the standard 6’’ Kindle which goes for R2995 on Wantitall.
“I don’t think it will as popular as the 6″ as the device is quite a bit more expensive. The major use for the DX is reading books as well as newspapers as the bigger screen gives it a ‘newspaper’ feel. Majority of people use the device for books, and don’t really need the larger screen as you can easily change the font size,” says Justin Drennan, MD of Wantitall.
The Kindle is enjoying significant uptake in South Africa. According to Drennan it is the most popular product they have ever sold, with hundreds of sales per month. “For such a niche item, it is doing very well,” says Drennan.
