Vodacom HD Voice support being rolled out
Vodacom has enabled support for high definition (HD) voice in Johannesburg, and is busy rolling out support for the technology country-wide.
That’s the word from Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub, who was speaking at the MyBroadband conference on Tuesday, 30 September 2014.
The announcement comes after Vodacom recently revealed it is running live trials for enhanced voice services, which includes HD voice, echo cancellation, and noise reduction.
Vodacom explained that echo cancellation and noise reduction will work on all handsets, while HD voice requires a device capable of supporting HD voice.
In August, MTN launched HD voice calling technology using the Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) coding standard.
“Currently, there are no HD voice calls on LTE, so this technology applies to 3G calls, MTN South Africa CTO Eben Albertyn said at the time.
