Vodacom HD voice support rolling out country-wide

Is there anywhere I can hear a sample of the difference between standard and 'HD' voice?
 
Will you be able to use this on VC to VC only or to other networks? Which other networks?

I've heard the difference using a Cisco VoIP deskphone and it's very noticeable. I'm not sure how it would work on your cellphone. Is this some kind of extension to GSM or is it over a data connection?
 
so I can get my calls dropped in HD now? and I will be able to hear a garbled noise of the person on the other end in HD?
 
ok...i dont know if it is hd voice or noise and echo cancellation ...but sis just phoned me ... after a bit i asked her where the hell she is because it sounded like she was in a isolation room. all i could hear was her voice. not even a hint of backgroumd noise or anythimg. sje said she in car driving. i said bull****. she opened the window and still iBBCould not hear anythimg.

Probably the noise suppression. Made me also think once or twice I dropped a call due to no background noise.

Well, I dont make a lot of calls Vodacom to Vodacom, but all I can say is the quality of that call was simply AMAZEBALLZ! lol Kudos Jannie .... I hope all our calls will soon be like that :D

You don't need to provision anything on the line. As it rolls out on the base-station, it becomes automatically available.

Your handset needs to have HD Voice capability and so does that of the receiver. Then if the network has it enabled, it will simply work.

The networks should tell us what happens when there is network congestion (at peak times). Will the network drop the HD Codec and use a lower bitrate code automatically. I believe it will do so but MTN and Vodacom need to clarify.

If the devices have quality mikes and speakers and the line is good, you get HD Voice on Skype.

You can try it out and you will hear the richer tones of having more bass, and the easier differentiation between sounds like 'm' and 'n' or 'f' and 's'.

It's a different protocol though. Mobiles use AMR-WB (adaptive modulation, wideband) whereas Skype uses SILK (their own protocol) and the fixed voice networks use G.722.
