Cell C ‘postpones’ mobile broadband launch

Cell C CEO Lars Reichelt unveiled Cell C’s new branding and strategy on 4 August, and armed with a new HSPA+ network said that consumers can expect to see broadband services from the company within the next three weeks.

This promise by Reichelt was in line with documentation which MyBroadband received which suggested that Cell C’s first mobile broadband offerings would be launched on 20 August.  This date came and went without any offering from the cellular operator.

MyBroadband called various Cell C outlets in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban, and none of them could give launch date details. Some franchisees previously pointed to the 20 August launch date, but they are now uncertain as to when and where the service will be launched.

Numerous outlets did however tell MyBroadband that Cell C is planning to launch two prepaid services:

  1. For R999 you will get a modem capable of speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and 2GB of data every month for a period of 12 months
  2. For R1,999 you will get a modem capable of speeds of up to 21.6Mbps and 5GB of data every month for a period of 12 months

When asked about the delay in its mobile broadband launch, Cell C said that they will be able to give more details about the launch next week. The company would not divulge information about the delay or what it is planning.
