SEACOM down…again

The SEACOM submarine cable which provides international connectivity for many local ADSL and other broadband users went down early on Thursday morning.

“Due to a fault on a transmission partner’s cable 3.7kms from Alexandria, Egypt, certain clients are experiencing service degradation on the SEACOM network. SEACOM is in the process of restoring client services and will report progress on the fault rectification,” SEACOM said in its Twitter feed.

“SEACOM is in the process of restoring client services and will report progress on the fault rectification.”

When SEACOM was contacted for comment about the problem they referred MyBroadband to their agency, College Hill, which they said will give feedback to consumers about the SEACOM downtime.

SEACOM’s PR agency College Hill was contacted for more feedback about the problem and when consumers can expect it to be resolved, but College Hill said that “they are in a meeting and can therefore not inform consumers about the SEACOM downtime.”

The latest downtime comes after many other outages in 2010, including an outage in April caused by repair work on SEA-ME-WE 4 cable and another prolonged outage caused by repeater failure on the SEACOM cable itself.

There were also other outages caused by SEACOM’s terrestrial network in South Africa, but the downtime associated with these faults were usually minutes or hours long, rather than days or weeks as was the case with the submarine cable problems.

Update

According to both Axxess and Afrihost the problem should be resolved within 2 to 2.5 hours.

Final update

Gian Visser, CEO of Afrihost tweeted at 12h12 that they’re just waiting for an official statement from SEACOM, but their tests show no packet loss. Axxess confirmed this with a tweet at 12h26, saying “PLEASE NOTE: SEACOM Cable Break – All has been RESTORED.”
