CNN AIR launched, using news drones for better reporting
CNN has launched CNN Aerial Imagery and Reporting (CNN AIR), which includes unmanned aerial systems (UAS) with full-time operators.
The aim of the unit is to integrate aerial imagery and reporting across all CNN networks and platforms.
CNN has already entered into a research agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration, and, in 2015, was selected by the FAA as one of the first three industry “Pathfinders” to develop the safe uses of drones in news-gathering.
CNN has shared data and research that has helped formulate a framework for various types of UAS to be integrated into the national air space and to expand their safe operation.
CNN’s news drones have been used to cover the flooding in Louisiana, the water crisis in Flint, and the Republican and Democratic presidential nominating conventions.
