Intel’s new CPU names make fast and slow processors look the same
Intel recently unveiled its 7th-gen Core processors, promising improved performance for users.
The new processors have new codes to identify them at 7th generation, but, as spotted by Laptop Mag, these codes mix the “Core m” name in the with the “Core i” branding.
The “Core i” range have always been powerful processors in high-end laptops, while the “Core m” CPUs are usually in smaller, less-powerful devices.
Processors which were formally called the m5 and m7 and now listed under the i5 and i7 lines, though.
Intel said the renaming decision is to make it simpler for consumers to select a processor, but many have argued that the naming convention will confuse customers.
Consumers can still identify the “Core m” chips in the “Core i” range by looking out for a “Y” in the model number.
For example, the “Core i5-7Y54” is a former “m” chip. The original “Core i” line will continue with codes like “i5-7200U”.
