SEACOM downtime next month
SEACOM downtime frustrated many local broadband users last year and the problems associated with the cable system do not seem to be a thing of the past.
SEACOM recently informed their clients that maintenance on electronic equipment on the SEA-ME-WE 4 (SMW4) cable, which connects SEACOM clients to London and Mumbai, will cause an outage between 6 February and 10 February.
The good news for clients is that SEACOM is organizing backup bandwidth to its clients to London via Mumbai and Singapore, but this bandwidth is coming at an additional cost.
Consumers in South Africa using SEACOM bandwidth may also see a spike in latency during this period because of the longer route via the Far East.
SEACOM’s Suveer Ramdhani confirmed the planned downtime on the SMW4 cable due to maintenance work, but added that SEACOM is offering all clients optional redundant bandwidth during this period
While some service providers seem to consider the SEACOM options, others indicated that they will use their redundant bandwidth on the SAT-3/SAFE system to provide an uninterrupted service to their clients.
