SEACOM scheduled for downtime in February 2011

Is EASSY in production yet? Lets hope ISP's are ready to failover to alternate cables during this period without impact to clients (QOS or Cost)

Just arrange with Garyvdh, he has the entire internet backed up so no need for a transit route via Seacom :D

wow .. we are doing maintenance on the cable that you paid for full use of in February .. luckily for you, we have arranged alternate transit routes at an additional cost .... umm .. no .. we wont be refunding you for breaks in service .. um .... 99.9% uptime agreement .. where did you sign that ... no .. we dont really care ..... umm .. not renewing .. eassy ... who are they again .... oh crud .. there goes our profitabilty ...

at least they've given us some idea as to when or that is will be happening & not, *** the users & chop the cable!!
i also hope openweb have a backup plan cos i cant not be connected to the net.. that what happened last yr really stuffed me over.. well all of us.. & im talkin about the heavy users not those light little people

This cable isn't so old yet, why does it need maintenance? SAT3 never has maintenance downtime... Or are we just not informed about it?

This is a brand fcking new cable! How is it possible that this thing needs so much maintenance already? Is a fungus or somthing eating away at the fibre optics or something? Bloody hell.

SEA-ME-WE 4 is not a brand new cable, it was built in 2005. But yes, it's a piece of ****, breaking all the time and causing Seacom to go down as well.

This isn't an issue or maintenance on SEACOM... its the SeaMeWe-4 cable having maintenance.....

Dr. Angus Hay, CTO of Neotel, today announces on behalf of the EASSy Cable Management Committee that the EASSy system has entered commercial service since 30th July 2010
Luckily we have EASSy as redundancy. Oh wait ...

What did I miss ?

To pick up some of the points that have been raised in this thread:
- EASSY is live.
- it is a 3.84Tbps system.
- we have lit 3 wavelengths and around 2/3rds of that has been sold so far (around 1/3rd by WIOCC). Lit capacity on submarine systems reflects what's been sold + near-term demand. It costs money to light wavelengths, and these costs normally come down over time. Why light wavelngths now and leave them idle for 6 months, when it's cheaper to light them when they're needed?
- look at the EASSy consortium members and WIOCC shareholders to identify those who are on the EASSy system now - we are currently loading 'investors' traffic onto the system.
- we already have another 80+ Gbps upgrade planned within the next six to twelve months.
- the new EASSy website is now live at www.eassy.org.
- there's also lots of information on the WIOCC blog at: wiocc.wordpress.com

Please get back to me on the blog or at info.wiocc.net with any questions.

This is the last i heard of them...
And it`s 1280(Seacom) vs. 3840(Eassy) must be struggling to get market share or to expensive.

But some time ago SEACOM said that they now have, or will lay, their own cable and will not use SEA-ME-WE 4 anymore. That is a couple of months ago. What happened to that?
