Telkom FreeMe R99 deal explained

Telkom FreeMe

An Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) complaint against Telkom’s FreeMe advertising forced the company to more clearly describe their product offerings.

The advertisement for Telkom’s FreeMe data plans that appeared on its website stated “Starting at R99.00 PM x 24”.

One consumer lodged an ASA complaint against the advertising, arguing you have to add a handset to the deal, which will lift the lowest price to R199 per month.

Telkom responded, saying the FreeMe offer does indeed start at R99.00 per month, but this is for a SIM-only deal which is only available at its stores. Customers cannot buy this product online.

Telkom said the fact that this was not communicated on the website was an honest mistake, and there was no intention to mislead consumers.

Telkom apologised for the omission, and submitted that it is amending its website to reflect the correct information.

The ASA accepted Telkom’s explanation and commitment to change the advertising on its website, without ruling on the matter.
