Exceptional HSDPA growth for Vodacom

Vodacom today announced that it has increased the number of data card and USB modem users to 266 000 from only 87 000 a year ago. The number of 3G/HSDPA handsets has also nearly trebled from 356 000 in September 2006 to 945 000 by September 30 2007.

Contract customers accounted for most of the data card users. Vodacom announced that its 3G/HSDPA mobile data card contract connections increased by 170.2% over the last 12 months to 149 000, up from 69 000.

The company’s drastic price cuts earlier this year – as much as 61% in some cases – clearly contributed to the steep increase in HSDPA subscribers.

The company’s popular Vodafone live! Portal attracted 1.2 million unique users during September 2007, up from 687 000 for the corresponding period last year.

The company’s mobile TV offering is also gaining in popularity, increasing its unique users to 35 000 – up 12 000 over the last 12 months.

Data revenue now constitutes 10.5% of Vodacom’s service revenue, up from 8.6% a year ago.
